What to Know
If you’re going to try and make a baller exit with the last word, you might want to make sure you know how to actually leave the room. In a clip posted on X from a meeting between Marco Rubio and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and the press, Rubio does just that and it’s a hilarious moment.
For many, it also shows how capable (or, really, incapable) Rubio actually is as secretary of state. The clip from the interaction with the press, in which Rubio fails to answer a question about Iran and then tries to leave out the wrong door, went viral quickly after it was posted. And when Forbes shared it to YouTube, you get an even clearer picture of the incident that is very much not the “fake news” that some of Donald Trump and Rubio’s supporters claim it is.
Marco Rubio is apparently anything other than smooth with his exits.

In the clip, a reporter asks Rubio about China helping Iran with a “missile program” and asks if that has happened. They are referring to the reports that China has sent missile fuel to Iran to aid the country. However, Rubio doesn’t respond to the question. In fact, he seems to try to make a clean getaway.
But the room and its exits have other plans in mind for the secretary of state. Rubio goes to the left and then right of the open doors. At first, it looks like Rutte is showing Rubio a painting, but then, when Rubio moves to the right of the open doors, it looks like he’s trying to exit another way. Whatever the situation is, he looks like he tried and failed to make an easy exit, all while ignoring the press.
Both Rutte and Rubio finally leave out of the doors they came in. Which, clearly, is the route they should have taken in the first place, right? Some users on X replied to the post with the video to claim that Rubio knows exactly where he’s going in the video, but he’s giving ‘George W. Bush can’t open a door after his 2005 speech in China.’
He dodged a question about Iran before he tried to leave.

Before Rubio makes a not-so-clean getaway in the video, he makes sure to not answer the question from the reporter. In the replies to the post on X, people pointed that out, but they also couldn’t help but make fun of Rubio for his flub and what some see as continued mishaps in the public eye.
“They can’t even find their way out of a press conference,” someone wrote on X. “Why on Earth would we follow him into a catastrophic war?”
“And to think…he’s probably the most qualified member of this entire cabinet,” a user added to the mix. “Scary.”
Another person posted in response to the post, “To my opinion Rubio, the so-called secretary of state, should have a clearer direction. I think he seems as directionless as a headless chicken.”
“They should have played the Benny Hill theme song,” someone joked. Ope.
People think Marco Rubio isn’t getting enough flack for his role in the Iran conflict.

Despite people calling out Rubio for failing to answer questions and for looking like a fool in the clip on X, others don’t think he is being called out nearly enough. According to News4Jax from Jacksonville, Fla., Rubio isn’t part of the narrative in the media nearly as much as other members of Trump’s cabinet.
Someone even pointed out on X, “Rubio will come out unscathed. The entire mess is going to be dumped on Hegseth and Vance.”
