Upstate New York Father Laughs Chillingly in Court as He Pleads Guilty to Murdering His Girlfriend & Son

Is there anything more chilling than seeing someone smile while they’re sitting in court being tried for a completely heinous and unthinkable crime? When the crime involves your own son and your partner, that works to take the creepy factor up to about a million. A man from Syracuse, New York, was seen smiling and laughing in court as he pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder of his 32-year-old girlfriend and son.

When the judge took in the man’s repugnant behavior and called him out on it, you wouldn’t believe his excuse for laughing in court.

A man admits that he fatally shot his girlfriend and 11-year-old son.

According to a report posted on Facebook by the Syracuse Police Department, in March 2025, 43-year-old David Huff was taken into custody as a suspect in connection with a double homicide that took place in Syracuse, New York.

Fast forward to April 2026, and Huff has admitted to killing his girlfriend, Yeraldith Tschudy, and his 11-year-old son, Jeremiah Huff, inside his stepfather’s house, Syracuse.com reported.

Huff opened fire on March 17, 2025, and used a 12-gauge shotgun to shoot his girlfriend and son multiple times, according to Syracus.com. Jeremiah Huff’s mother was reportedly the first to call 911 after receiving a distress call from her son shortly before he died. David Huff was also charged with attempted murder for firing the gun at his stepfather.

While appearing in court, David Huff smiled and laughed.

As if the murder of an 11-year-old kid who was fatally shot by his own father could get any worse, it somehow did.

When David Huff appeared at Onondaga County Courthouse on the morning of April 28, 2026, Judge Ted Limpert noticed him smiling and laughing as he read the allegations before the court, per Syracuse.com.

The news outlet reported that the judge asked him, “You find this funny?” Huff responded that he was laughing because he had a joke stuck in his head.

How unbelievably heartless.

According to WHAM, David Huff “repeatedly looked back at his son’s family during court” and even spoke out when the judge said he shot his son multiple times including “once in the head at close range.” He responded, “Jeremiah was not shot in the head by any means.”

David Huff’s mental health was evaluated for months prior to his court appearance.

Syracuse.com reported that it took months for his court proceedings to happen as he had to have his mental health evaluated for a potential defense to the crimes. His defense attorney, Shaun Chase, said David Huff was evaluated by multiple experts who came to the conclusion that any “mental defect” he had during the time of the murders was due to voluntary intoxication of drugs and alcohol.

Prosecutor Rob Moran said investigators do not know what substances the man took that night or his level of intoxication, per Syracuse.com.

In the end, David Huff pleaded guilty and will serve a sentence of 40 years to life in exchange for his plea to two counts of second-degree murder.

We can only imagine what kind of pain and unthinkable grief this violent incident has caused both of the victims’ families. Our thoughts and hearts go out to them during this time.
