A teen girl in Philadelphia is facing manslaughter charges after the death of a newborn baby. No personal details were given about the girl, which could mean that she’s younger than 17. Based on police reports, she gave birth at some point during the early part of the day, and the newborn baby was dead by the afternoon. Although it appears that she may have given birth at home without the help of medical professionals, police were called when the baby was discovered to be unresponsive. Based on what we know, she may have been concealing the pregnancy, and instead of asking for help, she killed her baby.
Many details about the birth are still being investigated.
Philadelphia police were called to an apartment in the Northern Liberties on April 25, 2026, just before 1 p.m., WPVI reported. There, they found a newborn baby girl unresponsive. She was declared dead a short time later.
Preliminary information suggested that the baby girl, who was born that day, may have had puncture wounds. The baby’s mother was a teen girl who has not been named.
“It’s sickening,” a neighbor who asked not to be identified told the outlet. “If it was intentional, then my heart is in pieces, and I’m sick.”
Another neighbor, who also asked not to be named, talked about knowing the mom and having no idea the girl was even pregnant.
“She always seemed so sweet, she always said hi to me, had a smile on her face, a really kind girl. I am beyond devastated to hear that,” the neighbor shared, per WPVI.
The medical examiner’s office was conducting a proper autopsy as the police continued to investigate.
According to NBC Philadelphia, the baby girl was officially pronounced dead by medics at 1:08 p.m., less than 20 minutes after police arrived at the teen’s apartment.
An official autopsy determined that the baby girl’s cause of death was stab wounds to the chest. The death was ruled a homicide.
On April 28, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office announced that the teen girl, who has still not been named, was being charged with her newborn’s murder.
She is facing the following charges: voluntary manslaughter, possession of an instrument of crime, recklessly endangering another person, and tampering with physical evidence.
The girl had options but for some reason she didn’t use them.

“What is clear now is that this heartbreaking incident constitutes criminal homicide and other criminal charges. More clarity is needed on this teenage girl’s mental state both before and shortly after childbirth, when the crimes occurred,” District Attorney Larry Krasner shared in a news release obtained by NBC Philadelphia.
“If additional evidence indicates modification of these charges is just, they will be modified in the future, as always,” Krasner added. “From the very beginning, our C.A.R.E.S. Unit (Crisis Assistance Response Engagement Services) has been in touch with the family, co-survivors and community impacted and will remain so to ensure they receive the appropriate resources and services, in collaboration with the assigned Assistant District Attorney and DAO’s Victim Services Unit.
“In addition, any potential medical and/or psychiatric needs of juvenile defendants must be addressed, as always, per the law,” he concluded in the news release, per NBC Philadelphia.
