Not everyone in the world deserves to be a parent. As someone who struggled with secondary infertility, nothing bothers me more than inadequate and unfit parents. I am certainly not a perfect parent at all times, so I don’t mean people who get frustrated occasionally and yell at their kids or the mom who was just too tired to play catch. I am referring to people who completely squander the gift of parenthood by physically and emotionally abusing their children.
I can’t imagine intentionally touching one hair on my kid’s head in a harmful way, and yet there are people who could do that and so much more without even batting an eye.
Utah parents Brigham and Melinda Merrell reportedly tortured and killed their 11-year-old boy and then tried to make it look like a suicide.
The Tremonton Garland Police Department responded to a call on September 21, 2025, saying a child, Moroni Merrell, was unresponsive, according to Law & Crime. Despite resuscitation efforts, the child was taken to the hospital, where he was officially declared dead. Police uncovered a pattern of abuse of multiple children in the home and determined the death was not at all accidental.
A probable cause affidavit obtained by KSL revealed a rather disturbing timeline of events that led up to Moroni’s tragic death.
Brigham reportedly called dispatchers and told them he found his ‘minor child hanging by a coaxial cable.’
When authorities arrived, the father was kneeling next to the boy but not performing CPR. As officers attended to the young boy, the father left the room to change his clothes. Police reportedly saw the action as being “consistent with an attempt to destroy or conceal physical evidence,” KSL reported. Home security camera footage also seemed to contradict Brigham’s account of the events that led up to his supposed hanging.
“A clip was also found that showed the suspect carried the lifeless child past emergency responders who were actively knocking on the door and continued to carry him up to the room where the hanging is alleged to have occurred,” the affidavit states. “He has since never given the same reasoning or justification of why the body was moved to a different location.”
Medical examiners ascertained that the young boy’s injuries weren’t consistent with hanging.
The “ligature marks” on his neck appeared to come from a different force, and the bruising on his back was “indicative of bruising that occurred immediately prior, or during death.” When asked about the marks, the father claimed they could be from a belt, KSL reported.
Interviews with the remaining children revealed a house of horrors, where they described being starved and tortured regularly. In separate interviews, the parents copped to the abuse, with Melinda Merrell even admitting to checking for bruises and adjusting their methods accordingly. She also reportedly admitted to switching from spoons to pans because the spoons were leaving marks, and she was taught not to leave any.
“Both parents admitted to the abuse and stated they should have looked into the laws in Utah before they moved here,” the affidavit disturbingly details, per Law & Crime.
Brigham Merrell was charged with child abuse homicide and child torture, while Melinda Marie Merrell faces one count of child torture. Now, all of their remaining children have been placed with welfare agencies.
