When a parent loses their child to murder, it changes them forever. No parent should ever have to bury their child, but knowing that someone intentionally killed them compounds that pain. Anna Kepner died aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship during a family vacation in November 2025. Her stepbrother, 16-year-old Timothy Hudson, allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered the 18-year-old in the stateroom they shared. It’s been a grueling six months since the teenager’s death, but her family has done its best to keep going.
On May 17, 2026, Anna’s father, Chris Kepner, accepted his daughter’s diploma from Temple Christian School in Titusville, Florida. It was a tear-jerking moment for all but one that Hudson could not take away from Anna’s family.
The school community’s support blew Chris Kepner away.
According to ABC News, when administrators called Anna’s name at the graduation ceremony, the community greeted Chris Kepner with a standing ovation. Anna had already completed the required credits prior to her death and hoped to one day join the military. That was all cut short last November.
Chris Kepner told ABC News the graduation ceremony choked him up quite a bit. “It was hard being in her place to do that, it’s very hard,” he said.
Classmates honored Anna during the ceremony.
They reportedly shared photos, and the valedictorian, Josiah Ray El Aouar, dedicated a portion of his speech to the teen, ABC News reported.
“My dear friend, Anna,” he said. “I’m so heartbroken and distraught that I cannot say these words while looking into your eyes, just like I have done with the rest of my classmates. Anna was one of a kind. Someone who encouraged me in every possible way.
“I miss your smile, your sassiness and your ability to light up a room with your gentle and infectious laugh,” El Aouar continued. “I can keep going on and on about Anna, but I’m sure that each one of us here today that knew her could, too. She always had a positive impact on whomever she interacted with, and I am torn that she is not walking the stage with us.”
The class of 2026 wanted to make special memories for Anna’s family.
Chris Kepner said the Temple Christian School class of 2026 gave him and his wife, Shauntel, a copy of Anna’s yearbook. All of the students signed it and wrote messages that the family looks forward to reading. Chris Kepner’s wife is Hudson’s mother. Neither parent commented on pending litigation the day of the graduation, ABC News reported.
We get it. Even though Anna wasn’t there in body, she was there in spirit. Her family deserved to enjoy those moments of recognition, faith, and gratitude. No matter how this story ends, there will be continued pain. They should enjoy the comfort while they can.
