Gone are the days of just a mail carrier and the occasional package delivery service on our streets. Now we get groceries, food, prescriptions, and anything else you can imagine delivered to our doors daily. Delivery trucks are constantly in our neighborhoods, and we often build rapport with the drivers. Most deliveries are quick, but sometimes these drivers are in the right place at the right time to help someone in need.
An Amazon driver dropping off a package at a Minnesota home may have saved a woman from a brutal death at the hands of her own husband.
The driver reportedly heard screaming coming from inside the home.
According to Chisago County court documents obtained by KSTP, an Amazon delivery driver was dropping off a package at a home in the town of Wyoming on May 11, 2026. While there, he reportedly heard a woman screaming. When the driver looked inside, he saw a blood-covered woman and a man wielding a hammer. The driver heroically burst through the door and told the man to drop the weapon.
Emergency responders found a gruesome scene.
The Amazon driver called 911, and police officers and paramedics arrived quickly. They found the woman with serious injuries, including indentations on her head. Her husband, 72-year-old James Alan Johnson, allegedly attacked her with the hammer in an attempt to kill her, according to KTSP. The woman reportedly told police she kept him off of her by kicking him in the groin. Had the driver not shown up when he did, the unidentified woman might not have survived.
During a conversation with detectives, Johnson allegedly told police that his business had financial issues and was on the verge of collapse, the outlet reported. Johnson tried to justify his actions by explaining that his wife would have to live on “significantly reduced” Social Security benefits, which he didn’t want.
Police thanked the Amazon driver for his bravery.
The Wyoming Police Department shared a statement on social media about the alleged attack. It added a note of gratitude to the unexpected hero.
“The Wyoming Police Department would also like to acknowledge the actions of the witness who intervened during this incident. The witness’s actions contributed to bringing the situation to an end and assisting the victim. We look forward to recognizing those efforts at an appropriate time,” the statement reads. “Our thoughts remain with the victim and all those impacted by this incident.”
Johnson admitted to the police that he had planned to kill his wife several days before, per KSTP. Because of that admission, he now faces a premeditated attempted first-degree murder charge and an assault charge. He was taken to Chisago County Jail.
In his mind, it apparently seemed like killing his wife with a hammer would be more humane than leaving her without enough money. We have a feeling she’ll figure something out.
