What to Know
After Charlie Kirk was shot and killed, his wife, Erika Kirk, who is also the mother of their two children, took over his company, Turning Point USA. But the issue that some people have with this change in CEO is the anti-working mom stance that both Erika and Charlie had for years. Now, after she posted on X about parents and people in general spending more time with family and less time elsewhere, she continues to miss the mark.
In the post, Erika urges people to take a break from social media and to be home more. Presumably, this is also for parents, women in particular, to benefit from time spent with their children. But users on X pointed out in response to Erika’s post that it’s just not realistic for many people. Maybe not her, the leader of a multi-million-dollar company, but that’s where the huge disconnect is. And no one wants to let her forget it.
Erika Kirk urged people to spend more time with family.
Honor God. Go to church. Spend time with your family.

I am so grateful for the ways my husband led us in this. Spending one day a week unplugged tremendously blessed our family, and I know it will bless yours. pic.twitter.com/Ow9Dhsno5E
Erika shared a video of herself with Charlie before his death. In the video, Erika explains to a large audience of Turning Point USA supporters that “honoring the sabbath” is important to their family and that, in setting his phone aside and giving his attention to the family, Charlie was able to “breathe” and relax.
In the post, she wrote, “Honor God. Go to church. Spend time with your family. I am so grateful for the ways my husband led us in this. Spending one day a week unplugged tremendously blessed our family, and I know it will bless yours.”
The idea seems to be to spend more time with family and celebrating God than ignoring both by spending time working or spending energy with work. And for some people, that makes sense. For most everyday Americans, it is not exactly feasible.
“Spend time with your family that’s freaking hilarious,” someone wrote under the X post. “Great advice, I’m gonna make sure to stay tuned. I’m sure more enlightening comments are coming. Throw some Bible verses in next time.”
Another person told her, “Then go to church and spend time with your kids and stop lecturing others.”
Someone called her out for her privilege.
The biggest issue that some people have is that Erika seems to not understand what people who aren’t wealthy CEOs are going through and dealing with every day. She might have once been able to reap the benefits of her CEO husband doing that and leading her family in that way. But it’s a privilege that not many people have.
“This sounds very nice on paper, but it is a very privileged piece of advice,” an X user commented. “The average person cannot afford to disconnect for 24 hours because their livelihood depends on being reachable. It is good that your husband is leading your household, but stop projecting your lifestyle onto struggling families as if it is a magic formula.”
Charlie Kirk also spoke about women being moms rather than career-driven people.

Whereas before, Erika was used to Charlie working for the family while she appeared publicly with him from time to time but mostly raised their children, she is now in his role as a Turning Point USA leader. As a result, she is a working mother who might not have time to just shut off her cell phone, as she has advised some people to do.
It’s also a way of life that Charlie spoke out against when he was alive. In a resurfaced clip on X, he asks two women, “If you have to prioritize one more than the other, would you rather have your tombstone say ‘CEO of a shoe company’ or ‘loving mother of three children and a wife’?”
