What to Know
On May 29, 2026, a North Carolina doorbell camera captured a horrific assault on a woman. Shockingly, the beating allegedly came from a police officer who’s since lost his job and now faces criminal charges. The surveillance video of now-former Shelby Police Officer Karson Hyder quickly went viral on social media.
The video is truly disturbing.
The video appears to show the 22-year-old officer ruthlessly beating 34-year-old Cherrie Moore during an arrest. WBTV reported Moore grabbed Hyder’s arm, and the officer threw her to the ground. Video shows Hyder straddling Moore and repeatedly hitting her with tremendous force. The woman cries out multiple times that no one has a warrant for her arrest, and she seems to take the beating from Hyder without fighting back.
The footage shows officer Chase Hyder standing over 34-year-old Cherrie Moore who is on the ground while he strikes her repeatedly with significant force. According to WBTV, the altercation began when Moore grabbed Hyder’s arm and then threw her to the ground. Throughout the video, Moore can be heard crying out that no one has a warrant for her arrest. She does not appear to fight back.
A second officer jumped in to help.
The video captures a second unidentified officer running to the scene and trying to stop Hyder. “Let go, let go, I got her, I got her, I got her,” the officer can be heard saying. Despite his screams and Moore’s pleas, Hyder kept going. Multiple officers instructed Moore to put her hands behind her back as the shaken woman pleaded for someone to call her father and to help her attain mental health care. She reportedly made conflicting statements about her need for medication.
Though what led to the attack is unclear, reports note that prosecutors initially charged Moore with breaking and entering, resisting arrest, and assault on a government official. It appears that once the video gained traction on social media , officials dropped the resisting arrest and assault charges against Moore.
Local government addressed the video quickly.
Shelby City Manager Justin Merrit released a statement regarding the viral video. He stated that Shelby Police are cooperating fully with the investigation and that Hyder turned himself in to the police. He was later released on a $10,000 secured bond.
“As we move forward, I ask that our Shelby Police Department and its Officers not be judged by the actions of one individual. The actions seen in the video circulating on social media are horrific and do not reflect the training or protocols of our department. Our officers are trained to serve with compassion, honesty, teamwork, integrity, professionalism, and respect. We will continue to reinforce these values and live them through our actions every day,” Merrit shared.
The family retained a prominent attorney to represent Moore.
Ben Crump shared a statement regarding the Moore family’s case and his intentions to fight for justice.
“Cherrie Moore called for help during a mental health crisis, but instead of receiving compassion and care, she was met with violence. No person in crisis should ever be subjected to this kind of treatment, especially by those sworn to protect and serve,” Crump wrote.
“The footage of this encounter is deeply disturbing and raises serious questions that demand answers and accountability. We intend to fight for justice for Cherrie and her family every step of the way.”
Hyder faces a misdemeanor charge of assault inflicting serious injury.
Photos of Moor’s face certainly show injuries that appear much worse than a misdemeanor. Gregory Moore, the victim’s father, told WSOC-TV he could not believe what he saw.
“This man is supposed to protect, but he chooses to, like he was wanting to murder her,” Gregory Moore said. “Thank God it was cameras out there.”
The concerned father then asked a poignant question. “And I wonder, do he have a daughter or kids and how would he feel if the shoe was on the other foot.”
