What to Know
Just before midnight on March 6, 2026, a panicked family member called 911 after making a grisly discovery at a residence. San Diego Police officers and San Diego FireRescue rushed to the home in the 6300 block of Genesee Avenue, where they found 81-year-old Kun-Ying Yang deceased. Nearly three months later, police arrested Yang’s daughters, Ingrid Wu, 52, and Rebecca Wu, 53, who acted as caretakers for Yang and their 88-year-old father. The women face murder and elder abuse charges.
The family called 911 for help after reportedly finding Yang not breathing.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported an unidentified family member called police for help, claiming they found Yang unresponsive. When emergency crews arrived, they reportedly found the elderly woman face down in the gap between the couch and the bedframe of a pull-out couch. The attempted lifesaving measures were unsuccessful, and Yang was pronounced dead at the scene. According to a police news release, the incident prompted an immediate investigation by the homicide team.
The Wu sisters apparently abused both of their parents.

San Diego Police Department Lieutenant Christopher Leahy told the San Diego Union-Tribune that investigators found Yang’s body in a peculiar state.
“She clearly should not have been in that position, and efforts were not made to remove her or get her appropriate medical care,” Leahy said.
He added that during the investigation, law enforcement found multiple complaints concerning elder abuse allegations at the residence.
“The suspects endangered their parents’ health and failed to act as legally required, leading to the neglect of their 88-year-old father and the death of their mother,” Leahy said.
An autopsy revealed the cause of Yang’s death.
Fox 5 reported the medical examiner listed Yang’s official cause of death as positional asphyxiation with neglect as a contributing factor. Police arrested Ingrid Wu and Rebecca Wu on June 4.
The women each face charges of first-degree murder in connection with their mother’s death, and they face elder abuse charges in regard to the alleged treatment of their father.
Elder abuse is a growing problem in the United States.
According to the National Council on Aging, one in 10 Americans older than 60 has experienced elder abuse. Elder abuse, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, is “an intentional act or failure to act that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult.”
The abuse comes in many forms, including physical, sexual, emotional, or psychological, confinement, passive neglect, willful deprivation, and financial exploitation.
The NCOA reported that during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many as one in five elders face some type of abuse. Sadly, one study showed that as few as one in 24 cases of elder abuse are reported to authorities, per the NCOA.
Even more alarming is the fact that nearly half of all incidents of elder abuse are at the hands of family members. Those people they trust the most will be the ones who betray them.
According to California law, if convicted, Ingrid Wu and Rebecca Wu could face 25 years to life in prison for their mother’s murder. Ingrid and Rebecca Wu are being held without bail. Their father, 88 years old, was also found neglected in the home. His condition has not been publicly disclosed.
