While the shocking details involving Matthew Mitchell killing his wife, Thy Mitchell, and their two children in a murder-suicide in May likely still remains in a lot of people’s minds as one of the most tragic familial incidents they’ve heard about in recent years, sadly, the startling information keeps getting uncovered.
Thy’s parents have filed a lawsuit claiming that Matthew had been planning to murder his entire family due to financial hardship. Reportedly, it cites that there was even video surveillance evidence taken from within the Mitchell home just weeks prior to the killings that suggests Matthew had been planning this unfathomable act.

According to Us Weekly, it’s been approximately two months since Matthew Mitchell seemingly shot and killed his wife, Thy Mitchell, and their children, ages 8 and 4, before dying by suicide. On Thursday, July 23, 2026, Thy’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit claiming that Matthew planned on killing his family and himself due to ongoing financial troubles.
“Rather than own up to the financial loss and fraud that he had committed, and face the shame that it would bring, he elected to murder his entire family and then kill himself,” Thy’s parents stated in a lawsuit filed in a Harris County probate court.
Some of the home security camera footage that’s being used as evidence to support the claims in the lawsuit is chilling.
Matthew Mitchell can be heard saying, “Gotta kill everybody.”

If anything, this home security footage works to show that sometimes true evil can be at play long before anyone even notices.
The lawsuit provides home surveillance footage of the Mitchell home that shows Matthew mumbling to himself while on camera that he’s “gotta kill everybody,” per the magazine. This allegedly took place one week prior to the murders and suicide.
There are additional videos established in the lawsuit that show Matthew speaking out loud to himself and saying that he needed to “end it” and that he couldn’t “prevent what’s about to happen to us.”
Other home security videos show that Matthew knew what was coming.
According to Us Weekly, on the family’s last day before the murders on May 3, there were also several video clips captured that shows the Mitchell family leaving their home to attend a brunch and running errands at Target. One clip that day showed Matthew alone in the house pacing and muttering to himself.
In the footage he can be seen saying, “I can’t stop it for myself — I can’t stop it for myself. I’m in such a deep hole.” Approximately an hour after that, he can be seen in the living room on the sofa with his head buried in his hands, per the magazine.
Thy’s parents have also accused Matthew’s mother of “conspiring” with him to shield funds in the amount of $1.4 million in an attempt to hide them “from those who might seek to recover them based on likely bankruptcy and the fraud he had previously committed” in the lawsuit.
Thy’s parents are seeking damages for wrongful death, punitive damages, and the creation of a court-imposed trust over Matthew’s estate, the magazine reported.
