Kelly Ripa Is Recovering From Dental Procedure That Left Her Unable to Talk

If you noticed Kelly Ripa was missing from her morning show last week, that’s because she was unable to do the thing that is most necessary for her job: Talk. Over the course of the week, her cohost and husband Mark Consuelos shared the gig with a lineup of celebrities who filled in for Kelly instead after she underwent gum surgery that meant she couldn’t speak at all for days.

Kelly was at home recovering from a painful procedure.

When Kevin Jonas appeared alongside Mark as a cohost instead of Kelly on Monday’s episode of the show, Mark explained that Kelly was recovering from a gum graft surgery and wasn’t able to speak. Her dentist had recommended the surgery a long time ago, and the day had finally come.

Mark said that Kelly is “doing great,” but she has a lot of rules to follow while she’s recovering beyond not speaking, like not drinking with straws and sticking to eating soft foods only.

“I’m trying to keep her to follow the rules, follow the directions,” he said.

Mark has been helping her heal as much as he can.

He continued on to say that even though Kelly was instructed not to look at the graft, it hasn’t stopped her from trying to find a loophole by asking Mark to take a look instead. “Last night she was like, ‘Can you look?’ I’m like, ‘I’m not pulling your lip down,’” he said.

She is handling the pain that comes with recovery like a champ, according to her husband. Mark said, “She famously doesn’t feel pain. When she goes into the dentist, she doesn’t use the novocaine. But this one hurts, so I know it’s bad.”

Poor Kelly. It sounds like it must be pretty rough, but at least she’s getting plenty of time at home to rest up.

So far, Kelly is making good progress.

Mark offered another update on his wife’s condition on Tuesday, saying that Kelly was “feeling better” and starting to talk a little, even though she wasn’t supposed to. He added, “She’s doing it without moving her bottom lip.”

And even though she’s been missing out on Live, Mark said that Kelly has been on the receiving end of a lot of support.

“She got a lot of love, messages, people were checking in, cause we announced it on the show that she had surgery,” he said, adding that their friends in Palm Springs had sent over “really good ice cream” to make the healing process a bit easier on her.

It’s good to hear that Kelly’s on the mend. She’ll be yapping again like nothing happened in no time!
