If you think about the work of an Uber driver, things could very easily get pretty boring as they tend to spend their entire shift just driving people from one destination to another. Some drivers probably take breaks to run their own errands or stop at home for some dinner, but overall, it doesn’t seem like the most thrilling career in the world.
An Uber driver in Houston was on his way to pick up his next passenger when things very abruptly took an exciting turn. Two police officers who were in pursuit of a suspect on foot jumped into his vehicle and asked him for help while they chased a fleeing man on the run. Things seriously went from zero to 100 in mere seconds!
Two Texas police officers used an Uber driver’s car during an intense foot pursuit.
On August 8, 2026, an Uber driver named Anthony Baines was driving around shortly after midnight in Houston, Texas, when he noticed a shirtless man suddenly run across the street in front of his car with two police officers chasing him, People reported.
While Baines was stopped for a moment before heading to pick up his next rider, the two officers approached his car and quickly got in, per the magazine. As it was all captured on Dashcam footage, you can spot Baines sitting in his car when an officer runs up to his car and says, “Hey, give me a ride over there please!”
The officer’s partner then approaches and gets in and they tell Baines, “Go, go that way … go go go go go.”
It’s all very exciting!
In the moment, Baines was shocked that any of this was actually happening.
Through the officers’ directions, Baines drove through the area as they searched for the man the authorities had been pursuing, People reported. When they spotted the suspect again, the officers jumped out of the vehicle and left Baines alone to react to what had just gone down.
“It caught me completely off guard. I’ve never had anything like that happen driving. I was surprised but just did what the officer asked in the moment,” Baines later explained to Storyful via People.
When all of this started, Baines actually had a passenger waiting to be picked up about a block away, but he wasn’t sure what else to do besides follow the officers’ orders, per People.
“I’m just running off adrenaline. I am surprised. I’m shocked. I have cops ordering me to do things. I’m going to comply,” Baines told the outlet. That sounds about right!
The Uber driver felt his military background kick into gear.
According to WKRC, Baines is a retired Army sergeant and he just used his experience and skill set to help him get through this intense and completely unexpected situation.
“I just kind of was able to relate it to an action movie where you see the good guy pursuing the criminal, and just running up to a random car, jumping in and literally saying, ‘Hey, go get that guy.’ So I just looked at it like, OK, this is my action movie moment,” he told the news outlet.
The Houston Police Department confirmed to KPRC that the officers had initially responded to a report of a man who had allegedly threatened to shoot a woman and her two children, per People. When they tried to detain him, he managed to escape and run away. In the end, the police were unable to locate their suspect.
After helping the officers with their hot pursuit, Baines was able to return to his Uber route and pick up his passenger. Baines said that the passenger was still waiting for him and had “the patience of a saint,” per WKRC. When he explained that he had just gone through “one of the most craziest situations ever,” the passenger understood the delay, the outlet reported.
