Allison sat down with People to talk about her late husband.
In a heartbreaking new interview, Allison got candid about the first days and weeks that followed after the family learned that Stephen had died by suicide.
"Literally getting up in the morning was getting harder and harder," she recalled, admitting that she needed to begin cold-plunging at night to finally find a way to release the tension that had been keeping her down. "It's now a part of my daily practice. Spiritually and mentally, it's really helped as well."
Stephen's death prompted her to change the way the family communicates.
Allison described how Stephen's loss created a new dynamic within the family, forcing them to reevaluate how to deal with complex emotions.
"I'm trying to teach them — and myself — that if you're angry or sad, it doesn't mean you're a bad person," she shared. "We're coping together, and that requires trust and being really vulnerable."
Their house used to be full of laughter.
The beloved DJ and dancer's presence looms large in Allison's mind as she recalled how the family would come together for meals in their kitchen, preparing food together. "Stephen would hold my back every time I walked past him," she recalled before talking about how much fun they would all have around the table.
"We'd have so many random conversations, and there was so much laughter," Allison continued. "Our love was so real and so loud. We always told people our house was like a choreographed dance."
Fans were stunned when Stephen was found dead.
"No one had any inkling that he was low. He didn't want people to know," Allison shared about her husband's shocking death. "He just wanted to be everyone's Superman and protector."
"It's been really hard because I can't understand what was happening in that moment [he died]," she continued, explaining how she is still working through her emotions that include everything from disappointment to love.

Allison is trying to turn her family's pain into purpose.
Stephen left behind three children — two the couple had together and Allison's older daughter from a previous relationship whom Stephen had adopted — who all wanted to find a way to honor the 40-year-old's legacy.
These days Allison is trying to honor her beloved husband with the Move with Kindness Foundation, which supports mental health initiatives. It sounds like she's found a way to remember her husband while also helping to keep other families from walking the same path she and her children are.
