Amber Heard Makes Rare Comments About How the Depp Trial Backfired for Her

During and after Amber Heard and Johnny Depp’s high-profile defamation trial, Amber was subjected to a lot of online harassment and misogynistic attacks. Many critics who followed along with the trial treated her with contempt, mocked her, made death threats, and refused to believe what she said. Since then, she has largely stayed out of the spotlight, but made some rare comments about how the trial has impacted her in a new documentary.

The new film, Silenced, was recently screened at the Sundance Film Festival. In the documentary, Amber, 39, indicated that she’s done trying to tell her story.

She explained why she agreed to appear in the documentary.

Prior to this new documentary, Amber hadn’t appeared in any films since the 2023 film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Silenced focuses on how defamation lawsuits are used to silence survivors of abuse. It focuses on international human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson, who represented Amber. In explaining why she agreed to appear in the documentary, Amber said, “This is not about me. I have lost my ability to speak. I am not here to tell my story. I don’t want to tell my story. In fact, I don’t want to use my voice anymore. That’s the problem,” per Variety.

Though she’s not interested in telling her story, she feels inspired by other women who are speaking out.

Amber also addressed the harassment she experienced as a result of the defamation trial. “What has happened to me is an amplified version of what a lot of women live through,” she said.

Amber added, “I remember at the close of the trial, the idea that I could say something to the press came up. [Robinson] asked if I was sure about that. [I thought], ‘If they throw things at me, it will make this point more obvious.’ I didn’t understand it could get so much worse for me as a woman, using my voice.”

In spite of everything that happened, she continues to have hope. “It gives me strength seeing other people take on the fight,” she said. “Women brave enough to address the imbalance of power. Looking at my daughter’s face as she grows up and slowly starts to walk into this world… I believe it can be better.”

Amber is a mom of three.

Due to the “chaos” that came after the trial, Amber relocated to Europe in hopes that it would give her more privacy, People reported. In November 2022, a source told the publication that Amber “is able to just be a mom there.”

In 2025, four years after welcoming her first child, Amber announced that she had welcomed twins. In an Instagram post, she wrote, “Mother’s Day 2025 will be one I’ll never forget. This year I am elated beyond words to celebrate the completion of the family I’ve strived to build for years. Today I officially share the news that I welcomed twins into the Heard gang. My daughter Agnes and my son Ocean are keeping my hands (and my heart) full.”
