17 Celebrities Who Had Surprisingly Low-Key Weddings

We’ll admit it: Celebrity weddings are way better than “regular” ones. There’s something really fun about following along with the planning, imagining what kind of dress the bride will be wearing, and gushing over the reception photos. But sometimes, these Hollywood weddings take place without any of that kind of hype whatsoever — in fact, many of them happen without fans even knowing they took place at all.

Though stars such as Kim Kardashian have gone all out, sharing their weddings far and wide on the internet (and on TV), many others have chosen to get married with a bit more privacy. It makes sense — who wants to be hounded by paparazzi on their wedding day? And of course, a wedding is a very personal thing. Does the entire world really need to get involved?

Here are 17 celebrities who chose to have low-key weddings, rather than huge, elaborate events with tons of media coverage. Fortunately, in most cases, they’ve been happy to share the photos after the wedding is over.

Katherine Schwarzenegger & Chris Pratt

Though they’d announced their engagement months earlier, fans didn’t know that Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger were getting married until they shared the wedding photos on Instagram themselves.

“Yesterday was the best day of our lives!” Katherine wrote in June 2019. “We became husband and wife in front of God, our families, and those we love. It was intimate, moving, and emotional. We feel so blessed to begin this new chapter of our lives.”

Sophie Turner & Joe Jonas

Though they later had a much bigger wedding with their family and friends in France, in May 2019 Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas tied the knot in a totally unpredictable way: at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas. There are few lower-key ways to get married than this.

Hilary Duff & Matthew Koma

Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma chose to tie the knot at home, right in their own backyard, in December 2019. They kept it a secret until after their big day, and even involved their daughter Banks, who Hilary held as she walked down the aisle, according to Vogue.

Mandy Moore & Taylor Goldsmith

Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith are another celebrity couple who chose to get married at home. Their boho-themed wedding took place in Mandy’s backyard in November 2018, and she even chose to wear a pink Rodarte dress for the occasion, bucking tradition.

Hailey Baldwin & Justin Bieber

Though they later celebrated in a bigger, more traditional way, when Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber tied the knot in 2018, it was quietly at the courthouse. As TMZ reported at the time, Justin and Hailey were spotted at the Marriage Bureau in New York City, and the pop star was even seen getting a bit emotional.

Beyoncé & Jay-Z

Given how private both Beyoncé and Jay-Z are, is it really any surprise that their wedding was super low-key, too? They got married in 2008, and according to People, only 40 guests were in attendance. They also happened to host the reception in Jay-Z’s New York apartment, and it was years before fans ever found out the details.

Cardi B & Offset

Fans had no idea that Cardi B and Offset were officially married until almost a year later, when she decided to share the news herself on Twitter when rumors about their wedding began to circulate.

“One morning in September, we woke up and decided to get married. We found someone to marry us, and she did, just the two of us and my cousin,” she wrote in 2018.

Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth

Though their marriage unfortunately didn’t last, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth did have a pretty low-key (and sweet) wedding. They got married at her house in Tennessee with just close friends and family present, sharing the evidence on social media after they tied the knot.

Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard had been together for years before they decided to go down to the courthouse and get married in 2013 — and they didn’t share photos from the day until 2016. According to what Dax told CBS Sunday Morning, the wedding only cost them $142 in total.

Ariana Grande & Dalton Gomez

In the spring of 2021, Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez got married at her home in Montecito, California, with fewer than 20 people present.

Ariana’s rep told People at the time: “It was tiny and intimate. The room was so happy and full of love. The couple and both families couldn’t be happier.”

Amanda Seyfried & Thomas Sadoski

Mamma Mia star Amanda Seyfried actually eloped with husband Thomas Sadoski in 2017, according to what he said in an interview with James Corden.

“We just took off into the country with an officiant, just the two of us, and we did our thing,” he said. “It was beautiful, it was everything that it should be. It was just the two of us talking to each other.”

Adam Rippon & Jussi-Pekka Kajaala

Nearly a month had passed by the time Olympic ice skater Adam Rippon announced that he had married Jussi-Pekka Kajaala on December 31, 2021.

“One afternoon JP and I looked at each other and said the very classic *romantic* phrase of, ‘Let’s just go do it now,'” he wrote, sharing a photo with their dog. “So we did. It was just the three of us and it was perfect.”

Jonathan Van Ness & Mark Peacock

Jonathan Van Ness is one of the most extra members of the Queer Eye crew, but his wedding was anything but. He revealed in an Instagram post after the fact that he and Mark Peacock had gotten married. He hasn’t discussed the wedding or details of it much since.

Domino Kirke & Penn Badgley

You star Penn Badgley married wife Domino Kirke in Brooklyn in 2017, celebrating on a Monday — definitely a low-key choice! As they got married at the courthouse, they kept it to a small group of friends and family, including Domino’s sister, Girls star Jemima Kirke.

Rachel Weisz & Daniel Craig

Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig kept their wedding so secret that no one has ever seen any pictures from it — and he even declined to open up about it in an interview with GQ.

“We got away with it. We did it privately,” he said. “And I’ve got a lot of people to thank for that. But that was the point. We did it for private reasons.”

Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi

After four years together, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi got engaged after gay marriage became legal in California. According to E! News, they married at home in 2008 with a backyard ceremony with 30 of their close friends and family members in attendance.

Princess Beatrice & Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi

Though their big royal wedding couldn’t happen thanks to the health crisis, England’s Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi still found a way to celebrate their nuptials. They got married in a small ceremony at All Saints Chapel in Berkshire, England, in July 2020, keeping the guest list short so it would be safe for Queen Elizabeth to attend.
