Since Donald Trump took office in January, several celebrities have decided to leave the US, and Ellen DeGeneres is letting the world know that her move out of the country is a permanent one. While talking to a crowd at a public appearance over the weekend, Ellen confirmed that she and wife Portia de Rossi have decided they’re staying in the UK, even though they originally planned to make their move a part-time one.
Ellen’s update came during a conversation with a broadcaster named Richard Bacon on stage at Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, England, on Sunday, where she talked about how she already prefers life in the Cotswolds.
“It’s absolutely beautiful,” Ellen said, per the BBC. “We’re just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture – everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.”
She added, “It’s clean. Everything here is just better – the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”
These days, Ellen mostly keeps her personal life private, but she has shared some peeks on social media of her life as an ex-pat.
Also during her conversation at the theater, Ellen said she and Portia “got here the day before the election,” initially planning to split their time between the UK and the US. But after seeing the way things played out with Trump’s reelection, the couple decided they’re staying.
Ellen also expressed her fears for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community in America, and for now, she’s doing what she can to be prepared for the situation to become even more untenable.
“The Baptist Church in America is trying to reverse gay marriage,” Ellen said. “They’re trying to literally stop it from happening in the future and possibly reverse it. Portia and I are already looking into it, and if they do that, we’re going to get married here.”
At the time of Ellen and Portia’s November 2024 move, an inside source told TMZ that the couple was reportedly “very disillusioned” by Trump’s win and wanted to “get the h— out” of the US.
