Fall 2021 Movie Preview: 20 Titles Coming to Theaters Soon

Summer's almost over and right now, it looks like movie theaters will be staying open for the foreseeable future. We're super excited because theaters are offering guests all sorts of upgrades and incentives these days as they attempt to drum up in-person audiences. From freebies and discounted tickets to premium experiences like reserved seating, enhanced IMAX screens, and reclining seats that vibrate in sync with action sequences, a trip to the movies has never been more fun. If you're tired of watching new releases from home, this fall will give you plenty of opportunities to mask up and check out what's new on the big screen.

Not only that, but tons of films we've been excitedly awaiting for more than a year now are finally set to premiere after being delayed in 2020. Of course, it's also horror movie season and since we are always down for a good scare in a dark theater, there are several movies on tap this fall that are sure to deliver just that.

Some of Hollywood's biggest stars — including Tom Hardy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Daniel Craig, Leslie Odom Jr., and Paul Rudd — all have new movies coming out over the next few months, and we can't wait to see them on-screen. Whether you're into nail-biting action thrillers or dramatic romances, there's a movie coming out this fall that's sure to entertain you and everyone in your family. Check out our top picks below.

'Dear Evan Hansen'

Coming to theaters: September 24

We are absolutely loving the trend of Broadway meets Hollywood. Turning some of the theater world's biggest hits into movies brings those incredible stories to so many more people. We love that Ben Platt, who played the lead in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway, gets to reprise his role in the film adaptation of the show, which is about a high schooler struggling with anxiety who gets a wake-up call after a tragedy involving a classmate.

'Coming Home in the Dark'

Coming to theaters: October 1

This thriller is sure to make you want to cover your eyes. It's about a family on a happy outing that ends up encountering a pair of sociopaths who begin tormenting them for what seems like no apparent reason. As it turns out, though, there's a mysterious secret from two decades earlier prompting the actions of the drifters who seem intent on killing them.

'The Addams Family 2'

Coming to theaters: October 1

Whether you were a fan or not, the animated reboot of The Addams Family captured a lot of hearts in 2019 and now, the creepy crew is returning for a second installment. In the new movie, Gomez and Morticia decide to embark on a family road trip after realizing how fast Wednesday and Pugsley are growing up.

'The Many Saints of Newark'

Coming to theaters: October 1

It's happening. The long-awaited prequel film to the popular HBO series The Sopranos is hitting theaters and HBO Max this October. Called The Many Saints of Newark, the film stars the late James Gandolfini's son, Michael Gandolfini, alongside Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, and Leslie Odom Jr. Ray Liotta also makes a cameo.

'No Time To Die'

Coming to theaters: October 8

The last James Bond film starring English hunk Daniel Craig, No Time To Die is one of those highly anticipated movies that was pushed back numerous times due to the health crisis. It will finally get its theatrical release in October, when fans will find out exactly what called 007 out of retirement.

'Survive the Game'

Coming to theaters: October 8

Although Bruce Willis has made a few questionable movie choices in the past few years, we'll still watch just about any of his action movies. In this film, he stars alongside Chad Michael Murray as a cop who is injured during a drug bust and ends up hiding out at a farm belonging to a military veteran who helps the two take down the criminals they're after.

'Halloween Kills'

Coming to theaters: October 15

When the Halloween franchise was resurrected in 2018, it captured an entirely new audience. Picking up where the original 1978 film left off, and now in the sequel to the 2018 film, Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode, this time leading a group of Michael Myers survivors in the fight against him.

'Venom: Let There Be Carnage'

Coming to theaters: October 15

We've been waiting to see Tom Hardy reprise his role as Marvel's Venom for what seems like forever, but the wait is finally almost over. This installment reportedly draws a bit more on Tom's innate comic abilities and will see him face off with multiple adversaries from the Marvel Universe.

'Needle in a Timestack'

Coming to theaters: October 15

Evidently, Leslie Odom Jr. has no intention of letting his Hamilton fame slip away. This October, he'll join Cynthia Erivo, Orlando Bloom, and Freida Pinto in Needle in a Timestack, a sci-fi film about a love triangle that crosses the space-time continuum, threatening to erase the memories of one man.

'The French Dispatch'

Coming to theaters: October 22

The French Dispatch is a Wes Anderson film starring a colorful ensemble cast that includes Benicio Del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Timothée Chalamet, and Owen Wilson. A retelling of a collection of stories that were published in a fictional American magazine in a 20th-century French city, it's sure to entertain folks with a penchant for quirky, artsy films.

'Jackass Forever'

Coming to theaters: October 22

Does nostalgia count as a reason to go see Jackass Forever? Because we totally think it does. The old gang, including Johnny Knoxville and Steve-O, embarks on one last series of the wacky and often dangerous stunts they're best known for. Just don't expect to see fan favorite Bam Margera, who was reportedly fired for breaching a sobriety clause in his contract.

'Ron's Gone Wrong'

Coming to theaters: October 22

The upcoming animated film Ron's Gone Wrong will definitely strike a chord with 21st century kids. It's all about a little boy who longs to have a bot for a best friend like all the other kids, but when he finally gets one, it's quite embarrassingly defective. The film features voice acting by Olivia Colman, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms.

'Last Night in Soho'

Coming to theaters: October 29

We're so excited to see The Queen's Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy on the big screen, and Last Night in Soho looks like it's going to be a good one. It's a thriller about a budding fashion designer who mysteriously finds herself able to go back in time to the 1960s, where she meets an inspiring singer. Things eventually get weird and quite dark, though.

'Eternals'

Coming to theaters: November 5

The first installment in a brand-new Marvel franchise, Eternals stars a big cast that includes Kit Harrington, Angelina Jolie, and Salma Hayek, who is one of the first Latinas to be cast in a lead role in a major superhero film. It takes place after Avengers: End Game and follows a group of immortals who've been secretly living on Earth for many years.

'Ghostbusters: Afterlife'

Coming to theaters: November 11

The long-awaited Ghostbusters reboot with Paul Rudd, McKenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Sigourney Weaver (along with appearances from Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray) hits theaters this November. In it, two kids move to a small town with their single mom and discover a relic belonging to the original ghostbusters on their new property.

'King Richard'

Coming to theaters: November 19

Originally set to come out in 2020, King Richard stars Will Smith as Richard Williams, the father of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. The film is something of a biopic that tells the story of how Richard nurtured and pushed his daughters to success and stardom through their incredible skill, athleticism, and dedication to their sport.

'Top Gun: Maverick'

Coming to theaters: November 19

Both Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer will reprise their roles in the Top Gun sequel, which was also originally set to premiere in 2020. The film sees the iconic character Maverick as a US Air Force veteran struggling to adjust in the 21st century. Big stunts and actions sequences are already reported to be impressive.

'Encanto'

Coming to theaters: November 24

Disney's latest film, Encanto, is already expected to be a huge hit. It's a Latino-centered story about a little girl from Colombia struggling with the fact that she is the only person in her family without magical abilities. The cast features big names including Stephanie Beatriz, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Diane Guerrero, and Wilmer Valderrama. And from the looks of it, the concept art and world building is just as visually stunning as we'd expect from Disney.

'House of Gucci'

Coming to Netflix: November 24

The much-talked-about film House of Gucci, starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, chronicles the story of Maurizio Gucci, who was the head of the famed Italian fashion house and the grandson of the company's founder. The film covers three decades of the family's tumultuous history and features appearances by Salma Hayek and Al Pacino.

'West Side Story'

Coming to theaters: December 10

Steven Spielberg's highly anticipated film adaptation of West Side Story is set to come out this December. It stars newcomer Rachel Zegler and Ansel Elgort, and is essentially a straight remake of the 1957 original about the turf war between the street gangs the Sharks and the Jets in ethnically divided New York.
