Inside Hilary Duff’s Airy Beverly Hills Abode

Some of us are really great at putting together a home, and decorating each room with carefully curated pieces that help bring together a unified feel to our home. Some like a calm serenity, others get energized with whimsy and color. And some of us have to be creative, so our kids can still live inside the walls that we spend so much time in together. Not all of us have the time and money to renovate and decorate. Still, celebrities, like Hilary Duff, have both, and their homes reflect this.

The 33-year-old mother of two recently gave Architectural Digest a home tour as part of its Open Door series on YouTube. In the tour, Hilary took viewers on a walk-through of the home she bought eight years ago when she was pregnant with her first child. Since then, Hilary welcomed a son, Luca (now 8), got divorced, fell in love with Matthew Koma, welcomed daughter Banks (now 1), had a backyard wedding, and remodeled this home twice.

Her space is an airy sanctuary and carefully decorated with the changing seasons of life in mind. It's clear how much love Hilary has put into her children's bedrooms, how she's able to have adult spaces while being realistic about kid messes. She's found perfect spots in her home for her most prized pieces, and has even given birth in one of the rooms upstairs.

It's easy to see the love and care in her home, also easy to see why she's chosen to call this place home for nearly a decade. Take a peek inside Hilary Duff's airy home in Beverly Hills, and it's clear to see why she loves it so much.

Inside Foyer

It would be easy to overlook the airy space from the outside of the home, because it's not noticeable until inside. Here is a look at the inside of the massive front door. There's loads of space for friends and family to pile in, and views of the front door from the furthest corner of the living room.

Formal Living Room

It's clear right away that Hilary Duff loves quirky furniture and isn't afraid to play with colors or texture. In this home, which is a 5,260-square-foot Georgian-style mansion, there are plenty of different areas that can use a pop of color, and Hilary does that well. Loads of seating here for the kids or friends coming for a party.

Hilary's Favorite Furniture Piece

Hilary said in her home tour that this large credenza is her favorite piece she owns. "I think it's from the '50s, and it reminds me of a corset," she said, adding that it was one of the first big purchases she made after thinking about it for days at 18 or 19 years old. It's well-loved — with water ring marks on the top — but it's sturdy and reliable.

A Couple of Chairs

Hilary pointed out these two chairs that sit under the giant staircase that are visible when first stepping into the house. She shared that these two chairs used to be in her master bedroom, but she had recently moved them down because she wanted them to be seen since they're so pretty.

Grand Staircase

On the other side of the two conversation chairs is a large curving staircase that opens to a vaulted ceiling upper level. The carpet has that older feel to it, with vintage charm and pops of color. This was created by weaving together three different rugs, so it has a unique feel to it.

Heart of the Home

Hilary said this room in her house is where the heart is, because it's where she and her children spend most of their time. She hid away all their toys for the tour, but was open in sharing that on a normal day, this room is full of kid toy clutter — and she loves it that way.

It's Also the Television Room

The celebrity mom also shared that this room is where she and the children like to watch television together — guilt-free. The fun feature here is that the picture frame with the cowboys is the actual television. It has a screensaver, so when it's not being used to watch cartoons or reality TV, it blends into the room as digital artwork, which can rotate the image.

Open, Bold Kitchen

It's so clear from this room that the Lizzie McGuire star is not afraid of trying out fun patterns to bring something pleasing to the eye. Here, it's the oversized bold tiles that bring a pop of fun into the kitchen, which overlooks the heart of the home television room. Hilary took time to note that the fruit on the counter usually has bite marks on each piece, courtesy of her daughter, Banks.

Showstopper Dining Room Table

Not a typical dining room that we usually see in celebrity homes, Hilary's is right to the side of the kitchen and holds this grand one-piece wood table and decorative chandelier. It has enough seating for 10 people — which is perfect for a blended family — and has enough space for an epic dinner party. Hilary told Architectural Digest that the family doesn't eat here as often as she'd like because her kids are young, but she images one day they will.

Kids' Playroom

Hilary repurposed this room, where the traditional dining room would be, given the large French doors. Instead, she made this more useful for her family with little children. She converted it into a playroom for both Luca and Banks. It's also where Luca was doing his schoolwork while he was doing distance learning.

Master Closet

Upstairs, Hilary takes us on a tour of her walk-in closet that she says is far more organized during the tour than it normally is. Hilary said that this space is helpful to get ready when she never feels like she has enough time. She says the adorable chair is often not visible, since it's usually covered in clothes that she pulls off the hangers and doesn't hang back up right away.

The Bathroom Is a Special Place

Most of us love our bedroom most or have another special area in the home, and for Hilary, it's this room: her bathroom. It has a walk-in shower, a vanity where she can get ready for the day, and a beautiful soaker tub. This room holds special meaning to Hilary, who says she sometimes locks herself in here to get away from her kids. It's also where her daughter Banks was born — right in the room.

"I decided to have a home birth with my daughter," she said. "so I had her right here, it was very peaceful and a lovely way to meet my baby for the first time."

The Soaker Tub Has a View

Hilary has several things of importance to her in this room — including artwork of her kids, and a guitar her husband, Matthew Koma, gave her — and she loves to take baths. She spends lots of time in this room relaxing, and with the view from the tub, which has large windows overlooking her backyard, it's easy to see why she'd spend so much time in here.

Hilary's Son's Room

Hilary said that when she was pregnant with Banks, she moved Luca into another room so his sister could have a smaller space. In doing this, she didn't want him to feel displaced, so she promised him a room beyond his wildest dreams, and she delivered. This room has a huge bed, lots of space for toys, a bunk bed with two beds and a net.

Oh, and There's a Slide

If that wasn't enough for a young boy to feel like he has the best room in the world, his bedroom also has a slide. Yes, his own slide, which goes from the top of where the bunk beds are and all the way down. Hilary says it's loud, but he has lots of fun running back and forth that it's worth the noise.

Serene Backyard

Now, outside is another area Hilary and her family spend a lot of their time, and it's so clear why. Her home has beautiful gardens, and she says she's working on her green thumb. The family has so much space to run around and play. She's not a huge fan of the brick walkway, which she might eventually change, but it's a minor thing.

A Large Pool With a Slide Here, Too

The backyard is also a large pool with a clubhouse for the kids, connecting to a slide that goes into the pool. Hilary said she uses the slide the most and has so much fun staying cool in the hot sun. Her son, Luca, keeps her on her toes, because he prefers to jump off the slide into the pool — which raises her heart rate every time.

Where Family & Friends Hang Out

Hilary said the backyard, specifically this conversation set, which is her newest change in the home, is where she and her friends hang out, so they can stay socially distanced from each other. Behind the chairs is another of Hilary's favorite places to hang out — the chicken coop.

Hilary Has Chickens

Hilary called herself a "dork" for spending so much time with her chickens, a relatively new addition to her family. Patsy, who she's holding in her hands, has yet to produce eggs, but she's hopeful that it will happen soon. In total, she has six chickens and some hatchlings inside who are still too small to join the rest of them in the coop.

Her Family Home

For Hilary, it was important for her to make a home that feels like that — somewhere her kids can be kids, and they can live without worrying about making a mess. She told Architectural Digest that she cares a lot about interior design and likes to invest in furniture. Still, she wants pieces her kids can climb on and "beat up a little bit." This is what helps the house feel like a home.
