How Jessica Biel Is Talking to Her Sons About Periods: ‘Tell Them the Truth’

Now that Jessica Biel is getting ready to release her children's books all about that time of the month, this celebrity mom is getting real about how she talks to her own kids about the subject. In an Instagram Q&A with fans recently, Jessica opened up about how she's talking to sons Silas and Phineas about menstruation. Although it can be an awkward topic for some moms to bring up, according to Jessica, all that really matters is telling the truth.

Though her Instagram Stories posts have since expired, according to People, she responded to questions with videos, including one where she answered the question on one fan's mind: "How do you talk to your sons about periods?"

Jessica and husband Justin Timberlake share two boys, 8-year-old Silas and 3-year-old Phineas.

She said she's 'still finding my way through.'

But she starts by being open about how she feels when she gets her period.

"I try to do it in a way that is giving them truthful, in a real, biological, anatomically correct information. You know? But also something that isn’t going to feel too overwhelming for them," she said.

She said it's important to her to 'tell the truth.'

"I’m not hiding it from them, and I’m telling them the real words, and you know, giving them the real definitions of these terms and phrases, in and around reproductive health that can feel scary, and can feel comfortable to use, and I’m just telling it like it is," she said.

She announced her new book earlier this month.

It's called A Kids Book About Periods — straightforward and to the point!

"People don’t talk enough about periods. PERIOD. So I wrote this book to change that," she wrote when she announced the book on Instagram. "If we grownups have the confidence to tell the truth about how menstruating bodies work, then we’ll give the kids around us the agency and voice to talk about their own bodies with confidence, now and for the rest of their lives!!"

Jessica's book will be released this May.

Scheduled to hit stores on May 7, A Kids Book About Periods is written for kids 7 to 9 years old to show them that "periods are normal and that getting your period is actually pretty cool."

Some of us would argue about the "cool" part when that time of the month rolls around, but it is pretty neat what our bodies can do. It's never too early to start talking about how the human body works!
