Kate Middleton is the first to take on the title of Princess of Wales since Princess Diana‘s death, and though they never got the chance to meet, it seems Kate would make her late mother-in-law proud. This week, Kate was announced the patron of a children’s hospice in South Wales – a position that once belonged to Diana. Looks like she truly is back to work this year!

On Thursday, Kate visited Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice in Sully, South Wales. According to People, during her visit, she spent time with the children at the facility, along with their parents, as she observed one of the hospice’s “stay and play” sessions.

Following her visit, news broke that Kate would be following in Princess Diana’s footsteps and becoming a patron of the hospice.
“Today’s visit was incredibly moving – seeing the care and compassion provided to children with life-shortening conditions, and to their families,” read a post shared on the official Prince and Princess of Wales Instagram account. “Spending time with some of them today highlighted the vital work done by Tŷ Hafan to support families throughout life and beyond.”
In a statement, Chief Executive Irfon Rees said Tŷ Hafan was “honored” to have Kate on board.
“As our Patron, Her Royal Highness will be an inspiration for children with life-shortening conditions and their families, our dedicated staff and volunteers and everyone who so generously supports us,” she shared. “No parent ever imagines that their child’s life will be short. Sadly this is the reality facing thousands of families in Wales. We can’t stop this happening, but together we can make sure that no one lives their child’s short life alone.”

Princess Diana wasn’t just a patron of the hospice: She was also a big part of the reason it existed in the first place. As People reported, Diana started working with the organization in 1995, before its facility was even built. She agreed to help and even managed to snag Luciano Pavarotti as a performer at a fundraiser for the hospice, but she died before she ever got to see it open its doors.
Now, Kate will be able to lend a hand and continue Diana’s legacy herself as she works with the hospice in an official capacity. Things really do come full circle sometimes – and in the most beautiful way.
