18 Most Iconic Celebrity Hairstyles of All Time

When it comes to the biggest celebrities whose fame has truly stood the test of time, a certain "it" factor is required. Just having an impressive body of work in the entertainment industry isn't enough. Making movies, TV shows, and music that fans love is important, of course, but that's not the only thing that people remember. We'd love to say that looks aren't everything for a celeb, but in a lot of ways, they are — and that goes for everything from their style to the way they wear their hair.

Over Hollywood history, more than a few celebs have had hairstyles that we'd consider iconic. If you're a child of the '90s, there's a good chance that Jennifer Aniston's haircut in the early seasons of Friends immediately comes to mind (or maybe it was Justin Timberlake's curly 'do, which was frequently called "ramen noodle hair").

Going even further back, legends such as Elvis Presley have made it clear how much hair makes the star, and we'll likely continue to see trends influenced by these styles for decades to come.

Read on for the most iconic celebrity hairstyles of all time.

Anna Wintour, the longtime editor in chief of Vogue, will always be remembered for the bob haircut she's sported throughout her career. The fashion doyenne explained why she's kept this style for so long in an episode of her YouTube series, "Go Ask Anna."

"The one time I tried to change it, it was a disaster. I had to wear a hat for several months. So I'm way too anxious and too lazy to try it again," she admitted. "I've had many hairdressers over the years and I can't remember how long I've had this haircut for."

Justin Bieber doesn't look like this anymore, but when he first arrived on the music scene with songs like "One Time" and "Baby," this haircut immediately made him memorable. He inspired a lot of teenage boys to go out and get a similar cut, even if it did end up making him the butt of a few jokes.

On most adult human beings — let alone men — pigtails wouldn't be a hairstyle that's taken seriously. But for some reason, Snoop Dogg really makes it work in a way that no one else could. While pigtails haven't been his only hairstyle through his successful rap career, they've definitely become his most memorable.

It would be impossible to talk about iconic hairstyles without talking about The Rachel — a cut that Jennifer Aniston herself has admitted she was not a fan of. She said in a 2011 interview with Allure (via People): "How do I say this? I think it was the ugliest haircut I've ever seen."

Dolly Parton is one of the most famous blondes in Hollywood, even though her signature style is actually a wig (or many wigs, to be more accurate). After bleaching her hair in her younger years, causing it to become damaged, she decided to go an alternate route.

She once said on an episode of Hallmark Channel's Home & Family: "I thought, 'Why am I going through all that? Why not just wear wigs?' That way I never have a bad hair day. I have a big hair day, but not a bad hair day."

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande's bright red hair was her thing when she first rose to fame (anyone remember Sam & Cat?) but ultimately, what she'll be remembered for is her ultra-high ponytail — the style she started wearing because of the damage done to her hair by all that dye.

"I had to bleach my hair and dye it red every other week for the first four years of playing Cat, and as one would assume, that completely destroyed my hair," she explained on Facebook in 2014. "I wear it in a ponytail because my actual hair is so broken that it looks absolutely ratchet and absurd when I let it down."

It's been more than 40 years since Charlie's Angels premiered, but Farrah Fawcett's hairstyle hasn't been forgotten. Even now, the feathered look is still popular, and the haircut even went viral on TikTok as recently as this year. Talk about an icon!

Princess Diana

Princess Diana will be remembered for a great many things, but her style and hair are part of what made her such a royal icon. Her blond hair was always kept short (though it did change shape a few times) and suited her perfectly, especially when she wore a tiara.

Years after her tragic death, we can't ignore the mark that Amy Winehouse's short life made on music. And part of her image was always her larger-than-life hair. According to what her hairdresser told Sunday People, Amy's beehive started out as a joke when he added multiple packets of synthetic hair to her 'do and ended up sticking with the look.

Kate Gosselin

At the height of Jon & Kate Plus 8 fame, Kate Gosselin sported this haircut, which made her impossible not to recognize. Unfortunately, haircuts like these have been more recently nicknamed "The Karen," and as we all know, that is not a positive thing.

Kris Jenner

Though her daughters' hairstyles are constantly changing (we've seen Kim with just about every single color and cut imaginable), Kris Jenner likes to keep her style the same. For as long as we can remember, she's had a jet black short cut. It fits her momager attitude well!

Keri Russell

Keri Russell shot to fame while starring in Felicity, with her long, super curly hair being the subject of envy for many of her fans. But in the second season of the show, she cut it all off, causing quite an outrage among people who couldn't believe it was gone. In fact, some went so far as to say that was the moment the show was ruined for them for good.

Justin Timberlake

We've finally made it to Justin Timberlake's ramen noodle hair. Remember when boy banders and teen heartthrobs frosting their tips was a thing? This might not be trendy right now, but back then, it made Justin just about everyone's celebrity crush.

Zooey Deschanel

Minus a brief period in her earlier career where she was blond, for most of the time that Zooey Deschanel has been in the spotlight, she's kept the same dark hair color and cut with blunt, straight bangs.

"When I first got into acting, I was a bit of a chameleon and just wasn't recognizable," she wrote for Glamour in 2013. "So I used my look to help create an identity. Now people know me as the girl with bangs. They're not for everyone, but they work for me."

Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley's pompadour hairstyle was always perfectly coiffed — with not a hair ever out of place — and it ended up being one of the things he was most known for. His hair was originally blond, so the dark black hair we know him for was thanks to dye. It was clearly the right choice!

Sarah Jessica Parker

What we think of as Carrie Bradshaw's hair will always be the way we picture Sarah Jessica Parker, and that's not necessary a bad thing! The Sex and the City star's curls were a bit tighter and more untamed in the early seasons of the show, but it worked for her.

Tina Turner

We couldn't imagine Tina Turner without her massive hair the way it was styled in the '80s. And although she eventually went on to wear a wig (as we're noticing a lot of these stars do), her haircut ended up defining that era — not just in music, but in general.

Meg Ryan

Our favorite rom-com heroine, Meg Ryan, just wouldn't be the same without this haircut — which was a total accident. According to what Meg told InStyle, the iconic cut was born after her stylist accidentally burned a lock of her hair with a curling iron, and they had to act fast.

"A sizable chunk of my hair had singed off and was still wrapped around the iron," she explained. "I noticed the flame first. For a second Sally looked like the Statue of Liberty: frozen, torch aloft, and a little green. You can't really blame her for the iron's overheating because of the different voltages in Europe. She was left to scissor away until we got what we got."
