15 Most Unforgettable Golden Globes Looks of All Time

After one year off, it's official: The Golden Globes are back. In 2022, the show was canceled after a major boycott involving the Hollywood Foreign Press Association because of ethical and financial corruption, but this year, the awards show is returning. With Jerrod Carmichael as host, the 2023 Golden Globes will air January 10 on NBC in a retooled format that's hopefully better than ever before. But more than finding out which stars are going home with which awards, we're excited to see what they all wear on the red carpet.

After all, the airing of the Golden Globes means that the 2023 awards season is finally here, and we can't celebrate without looking back at some of the best looks the Globes have brought us over the years. After all, the show was first held in 1944. That's nearly 80 years of Hollywood fashion.

Scroll on to see our picks for the most memorable Golden Globes looks — from glamorous gowns to bespoke suits — in the show's history. We're sure at least a couple celebs in attendance will manage to top them this year!

Going all the way back to 1962, Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe won her third Golden Globe award that year: the Henrietta Award for World Film Favorite Female. For the occasion, she wore an emerald green sequined dress by Norman Norell. According to Vogue, that one-of-a-kind gown was sold at an auction in 1999 for $96,000. Just imagine what it's worth today!

In 1973, Cher and Sonny Bono were still married when they attended the Golden Globes together. That night, Cher turned heads when she showed up in this edgy, midriff-baring outfit, and she and her former partner weren't just there to grace the red carpet. The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour was nominated for Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy.

How adorable did Julia Roberts look in this menswear outfit she wore to the 1990 Globes? Dressed in the oversized Armani suit, Julia took the stage to accept the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Steel Magnolias, and she was clearly glowing that night.

We will never forget when Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder were a couple — long before The Pirates of the Caribbean and Stranger Things, of course. They arrived together at the 1991 Golden Globes in matching black attire, two years before they would ultimately go their separate ways.

Fran Drescher

At the height of the popularity of her series The Nanny, Fran Drescher arrived at the 1996 Golden Globes in an outfit that Fran Fine definitely would have approved of. (Get a load of that floral headpiece!) That year, she was nominated for her role in the sitcom in the category of Best Television Actress — Musical/Comedy Series.

The 1999 Globes would be the year that Angelina Jolie took home the award for Best Actress — Miniseries or Television Film for Gia — and the year that she ended up wearing one of her most iconic looks. Her sequin gown was by Randolph Duke, and after changing into a different dress later that night, she would famously jump into a pool fully dressed at an after-party.

Wearing a vintage Valentino gown and sporting those side bangs that were so iconic in the early 2000s, Jennifer Aniston made sure her last Golden Globes as a cast member of Friends would be a memorable one. She looked good and won a golden trophy for playing Rachel Green.

It would be impossible to catalog all of the amazing red carpet looks that Nicole Kidman has worn over the span of her impressive acting career, but this is a big one. In 2005, she wore a gorgeous Gucci dress with feather detailing on the strap. This blue is her color!

Beyoncé

This major throwback really shows how far Beyoncé has come — but also reminds us how she was still Queen Bey, even going back to 2007. After seeing her in this glittery gold Elie Saab dress with a plunging neckline, we are more convinced than ever that this mom of three simply does not age.

Anne Hathaway

Speaking of celebrities who look good in sparkles, let's add Anne Hathaway to the list. In 2011, she wore this beautiful, super glam Giorgio Armani gown, the same year she was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture after starring opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in Love & Other Drugs.

Lupita Nyong'o

We can't remember a single time that Lupita Nyong'o didn't totally knock it out of the park on a red carpet, but the look she wore to the 2014 Golden Globes is definitely a favorite. Her red Ralph Lauren cape gown definitely turned heads the year she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 12 Years a Slave.

When the 2017 Golden Globes Awards first aired, Reese Witherspoon's red carpet look was praised for the way it made her stand out in the crowd. That year, many of her fellow celebs opted for black gowns, but instead, Reese wore this sunny yellow Versace dress.

Lady Gaga

If we can count on Lady Gaga for one thing, it's for her to bring the drama. In 2019, she was celebrating two nominations for A Star Is Born. She ultimately walked away with the award for Best Song for "Shallow" — all while wearing this showstopping custom Valentino dress that was auctioned off after a housekeeper found it was left behind in her hotel room.

Billy Porter

Lady Gaga definitely had to share the attention on the red carpet in 2019, though — mostly with Billy Porter, who was nominated for Pose that year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, his fully custom look took six months to make, thanks to all that hand beading and embroidery.

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez stunned on the red carpet in 2020 — then again, doesn't she always? That year, the singer (who had not yet reunited with her now-husband, Ben Affleck) wore a Valentino ballgown with an oversized bow as she celebrated her nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her movie Hustlers.
