Summer is upon us, and hopefully that means a little relaxing in between working and corralling kids to camp or the pool. If you do get some downtime in the next couple of months, you could spend it watching one of these summer TV shows. This season's lineup is jam-packed with brand new series in all kinds of genres. There's a fun reality dating show, hilarious comedies, a musical series, several captivating mysteries, and at least one show that seems poised to become the next Big Little Lies.
Whether you have Netflix, Hulu, regular cable, or some combination of the three, there's a show for you just waiting to be watched. So hop on the couch, grab a snack, and enjoy your summer the right way — indoors with the air conditioning blasting while you're curled up in a blanket watching TV.
'Lisey's Story'
Premieres: June 4 on Apple TV+
If you're a Stephen King fan, you'll want to check out this adaptation of his psychological horror novel Lisey's Story. It stars Julianne Moore as the grieving widow Lisey, who suddenly finds herself with a terrifying stalker. Like all good Stephen King projects, it will both scare and intrigue you.
'Loki'
Premieres: June 9 on Disney+
The latest Disney+ Marvel show is Loki, which gives Thor's brother (aka the God of Mischief) the spotlight. The show picks up after the events of Avengers: Endgame, so if you haven't watched that one yet, maybe pop it on in preparation. It also wouldn't hurt to watch (or rewatch) the Thor films to really get to know this dastardly villain character.
'Starstruck'
Premieres: June 10 on HBO Max
This series explores what happens when a young millennial woman finds herself hooking up with a famous movie star. It's like everyone's biggest fangirl dream turned into reality — especially when it turns out there may be more between them than just a one-night stand. If you ever had a celebrity's poster on your ceiling, this show may be for you.
'Reunion Road Trip'
Premieres: June 10 on E!
This four-episode series will reunite the casts of iconic TV shows like Scrubs, All My Children, A Different World, and the original Queer Eye. They'll get together to talk about everything from their show's early days to its popularity now, and we're sure to learn plenty of behind-the-scenes secrets.
'The Celebrity Dating Game'
Premieres: June 14 on ABC
Watch celebs get the chance to find true love on this wacky dating reality show. Stars like Taye Diggs, Bachelorette Hannah Brown, and Iggy Azalea will have a change to meet their match over the course of the series. And even if you don't care if they find love, hosts Zooey Deschanel and Michael Bolton promise a hilarious and entertaining show.
'Physical'
Premieres: June 18 on Apple TV+
Head back to the 1980s with this period comedy/drama. It stars Rose Byrne as a woman who turns to aerobics to deal with the stresses in her life (like her husband running for state assembly and her own personal dramas). The music and the outfits alone are reasons enough to tune in. So much nostalgia!
'Sex/Life'
Premieres: June 25 on Netflix
This series explores Billie Connelly's inner turmoil as she reconciles her current life (stay-at-home mom, wife) with the free-spirited woman she used to be in the past. She uses a journal to fantasize about a different life, which includes a steamy affair with her ex. But when her husband finds the journal, her whole life could be turned upside down.
'Monsters at Work'
Premieres: July 2 on Disney+
The Monster's, Inc. gang is back in this new Pixar Disney+ series. The show picks up the day after the monsters start making kids laugh to obtain power for Monstropolis (the events of the original movie). It focuses on the story of a new monster named Tylor Tuskmon, who isn't as good at making people laugh as he is at scaring them. This one will be fun for both kids and adults.
'Gossip Girl'
Premieres: July 8 on HBO Max
The long-awaited Gossip Girl reboot is almost here. The HBO Max series picks up eight years after the original series with a whole new cast of New York private school teens. A lot has changed with regards to social media since the original series, and the reboot plans to explore that. Kristen Bell also reprises her iconic narrator role.
'American Horror Stories'
Premieres: July 15 on FX
This show is a spin-off of American Horror Story and brings together a bunch of actors from your other favorite series. Among the cast is Kevin McHale from Glee, Dyllón Burnside from Pose, and Charles Melton from Riverdale. Since American Horror Story doesn't return until late August, this show can tide you over until then.
'Schmigadoon!'
Premieres: July 16 on Apple TV+
Musical lovers, this one's for you! Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key play a couple who stumbles upon a town that's basically the inside of a 1940s musical. But soon they realize that they can't leave until they find real love. As one would expect, there will be plenty of singing and dancing from this all-star cast, which includes Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Jane Krakowski, and more.
'Power Book III: Raising Kanan'
Premieres: July 18 on Starz
Even if you never watched Power, you can tune into this prequel series. It follows the early life of character Kanan Stark in 1990s Queens, New York, when he's just a teenager. Kanan was played by 50 Cent in the original show, and in the prequel, he's played by Mekai Curtis. Once you watch this series, you'll want to check out Power too.
'Nine Perfect Strangers'
Premieres: August 18 on Hulu
If you were looking for a new Big Little Lies, Hulu has you covered. Nine Perfect Strangers is another adaptation of a Liane Moriarty book that stars Nicole Kidman. Melissa McCarthy and the Good Place's Manny Jacinto will also get to show a more dramatic side of their acting. The story follows a group of people who head to a wellness retreat only to find that it's not exactly the relaxing experience they were hoping for.
'The Chair'
Premieres: August 27 on Netflix
Sandra Oh may not have come back to Grey's Anatomy for this most recent season, but she is about to get her own new show on Netflix. The comedy/drama series follows the day-to-day struggles of the chair of a university's English department. And while that may sound kind of boring, it's Sandra Oh, so it could never be.
'Only Murders in the Building'
Premieres: August 31 on Hulu
Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin make up about the weirdest comedy ensemble we could think of, but we can't wait to see it unfold. The three of them play neighbors who are obsessed with true crime and one day find themselves in the middle of one when a murder happens in their apartment building.
