Prince Harry is talking about how different his life has been over the past few years. And he’s attributing his wife, Meghan Markle, of helping him to become the man he is and for living the life he currently has.
The Duke of Sussex participated in a virtual book event March 4 where he talked more about his memoir 'Spare.'
Sitting down with Dr. Gabor Maté, a physician and expert specializing in addiction, stress, trauma, and childhood development, Prince Harry talked about how different his life has been following his relationship with the Duchess of Sussex.
Meghan and Harry have been together for close to seven years, and their lives have both shifted a lot since then — both personally and professionally. Not only are they no longer working royals, but they also moved to California and are parents to 3-year-old Archie and 21-month-old Lilibet.
Prince Harry shared in the interview that Meghan 'saved' him from himself.
During the conversation with Maté, Harry spoke about Meghan and how different their lives were when they met.
"My wife saved me. I was stuck in this world, and she was from a different world and helped draw me out of that," Harry admitted, according to People.
Harry does say, however, that he still had to do the work.
"But none of the elements of my life now would have been possible without me seeing it for myself," he told Maté.
Of course, Harry is talking about the issues he’s had in his family, both as a member of the family and a working royal. It’s no secret he’s been feuding with his dad, King Charles, and brother, the Prince of Wales. There’s been much strain, and Harry’s shared more of what went on behind the scenes in his book, Spare.
Prince Harry is thankful for Meghan while he’s been working through his personal struggles.
"My partner is an exceptional human being,” Harry told Maté. “I'm eternally grateful for the wisdom and the space that she has been able to give me."
Harry also spoke about having to go through a “crash course” in racism, looking not only at himself, but his family and the world.
"I think what people perhaps don't understand is the pain that it causes to an individual is huge, but then the pain that it causes to society is immense," he said.
Harry has been in therapy to help give him the tools to work through some complicated issues stemming from his childhood.
In his conversation with Maté, Harry spoke about how much therapy has helped him work through the pain left from his childhood and the pressure of growing up as a royal in the spotlight.
"The times that I ventured toward being myself, being my authentic true self, whether it was through media or family or whatever it was, it was almost like, 'Don't be yourself, come back to what you're expected to be,' if that makes sense,” he admitted.
In a previous interview, Harry said it was Meghan who convinced him to seek therapy.
"It was meeting and being with Meghan, I knew that if I didn't do therapy and fix myself, that I was going to lose this woman who I could see spending the rest of my life with," Harry said in 2021.
Since then, he’s been open about how he’s in therapy not only to work through his strained relationship with his family but to help heal the trauma of losing his mom at such a young age.
