Fabulous 1950s Video on Hair Care Will Make You Rethink Your Washing Routine (VIDEO)

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times: Washing your hair daily is a crime. I exercise regularly and still only wash it at absolute most three times a week usually twice. I know you're all Ew gross you're so greasy yuck oh my god do you have lice holy shit don't go near my kids, etc., and if you want to go on believing that those of us who understand the value of unwashed hair are disgusting, then fine. Read no further. I'm sure you have better things to do than read this post anyway, like washing your hair, for example.

But for those of you who know the truth, I think you'll love this vintage 1950s instructional video on how to care for your hair. One of their biggest tips? Wash your hair often. And their version of often is every two weeks.

Now that's what I'm talking about. They suggest washing your hair with water and a mild soap, rinsing, then adding a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar to the water, then rinsing, then rinsing again with clean water. That's a lot of rinsing, and why she's doing it in the sink is beyond me — maybe they didn't want a provocative shower scene? I don't know about their recommended products, but I like their recommended frequency.

They go on to extol the virtues of hair brushing, which I am neither for nor against. I don't brush my hair with anything more than my fingers generally speaking, but every other day or so, I'll use a brush if I have knots. I don't like to brush too often because I find it makes my hair frizzy. Too each their own.

It takes a while to adopt a hair routine that includes less washing and brushing, but — trust me, trust me please! — it's so much better once you do. Your hair looks better, you're saving time, and it's way less damaging. If you're worried about your hair smelling between washes, there are some excellent hair deodorizers and powders out there to help with that.

Take a page out of your grandma's book and wash less often. It was hip in the '50s, and it's cool again, 60 years later. Just look how happy these ladies are!
