36 ‘Barndominiums’ That’ll Inspire Anyone to Ditch the Big City

Any Fixer Upper fan worth their salt remembers the episode where Chip and Joanna transformed a run-down old barn and turned it into an incredible living space for a young family. It was chic, rustic, and oh-so-homey. But the best part was, it had such an incredible backstory. Chip and Joanna aren't the only ones transforming old barns into beautiful modern homes, though. The "barndominium" trend has been catching on like wildfire, and has become a great way for homeowners on a budget to buy low and repurpose a bit of history into something great. And the results are often incredible.

For one thing, barndominiums often have roomy, open floor plans that work well for families looking for more space. They also allow homeowners to become inspired when remodeling, thanks to their natural rustic charm. Love some exposed high beams? Chances are, an old country barn may have some that'll bring in that will offer cathedral-like ceilings with a farmhouse-style twist.

Not all barndominiums are the results of massive renovations, though. Builders now have lots of new floor plan options and custom design kits inspired by the trend, so homeowners can get the living space they want, built from scratch. Many are also built to be more energy and cost-efficient, thanks to modern windows and concrete floors that regulate indoor temperatures, and more durable, due to their steel frame design. And perhaps best of all, they often come pre-engineered so construction is quicker and easier. Scroll on and get inspired by sliding barn doors, loft-style second floors, and the thought of being surrounded by nature.

Be Our Guest

Believe it or not, this is just the guest house (or make that "guest barn") on the property where this homeowner lives. Inside, visitors will find two bedrooms, a gorgeous kitchen, and a living room featuring a pool table. (Personally, I'd never want to leave.)

The Total Package

This recently sold Texas home pretty much has it all. At over 4,000 square feet, it's a three-bedroom, three-bath home complete with custom cabinets, a game room, a 3+ car garage, and a covered patio.

Wide Open Spaces

With windows like those, living in the middle of nowhere is kind of a must. But just think of those views …

Modern Views

Speaking of views … I could definitely get cozy inside this chic barndominium, which offers floor-to-ceiling windows and a comfy-yet-modern decor vibe.

Step inside this converted barn, and it'll feel like stepping into an updated farmhouse in the French countryside.

I've got one word for this look: Oui!

Country White

Another way people are using updated barns these days are as venue spaces for weddings, showers, and more. This gorgeous space looks just about ready for anything.

High Style

High ceilings FTW! This home really utilizes the beautiful, loft-like feel barndominiums can have in a way that makes a living space feel open and unrestricted.

Industrial Chic

For those who love the farmhouse aesthetic, but are a little more rock and roll than country, this industrial-style barndominium offers the best of both worlds. It's also a great vibe for a functional home office space.

Out of the Blue

The best part of this converted old barn is the homey back porch (swipe through to see!). It'll make any guest want to pull up a chair and stay a while.

Country Living

This updated barndominium features a three-car garage and that all-white everything look that everyone loves. Plus, it's located on 4.5 acres — talk about solitude!

A Woodsy Retreat

Part barn, part cabin in the woods. A pole barn house like this one is perfect for anyone who wants a remote vacation home with space at a cost that doesn't break the bank.

Sky High

Get ready to fall in love with these gorgeous beams … and that center column fireplace! I can already see what this space will look like furnished.

Gathering Place

Here's another impressive barndominium that's mainly used as a venue for weddings and other special events. Those sliding barn doors really make for the perfect entrance.

Let There Be Light

Talk about next-level farmhouse living. I'm loving the double staircases, large center window, and that chandelier! Perfection.

A Classic 'Fixer Upper'

If this one looks familiar, that's because it was Chip and Joanna's custom design! A beautiful mix of old-world charm and updated, modern features.

Porch Life

This porch feels like something out of an old Western! The wagon wheel and farmhouse-style chandelier really add a laid-back, unique touch that's undeniably cool.

Classic Red Barn

… and now for a front view! (It really does turn the classic red barn look on its head.)

Kitchen Goals

Another great part about barndominiums? Their wide open floor plans allow for a sprawling dream kitchen.

Easy Living

Not every barndominium has to be massive. This simple design looks like a rustic retreat from years past.

Home on the Ranch

Plenty of well-placed windows give this large barndominium 360-degree views of the gorgeous green fields that surround it. It also has lots and lots of patio and deck space for entertaining guests outside.

Campfire Memories

Forget the inside of this barndominium — the outside has a lot to offer, too. That simple stone fire pit creates the perfect atmosphere for roasting marshmallows or catching up with old friends.

Table Talk

This vintage barn was turned into a rustic venue space that's literally made for great conversation. (Also, I've never wanted to sit on a hay bale and pet a rooster more.)

Raise the Roof

These exposed beams were used to hang a hay trolley when the barn was first built. Now, they make for a gorgeous accent to an already beautiful room.

Home Sweet Home

Talk about a blank slate. This modern barndominium is just waiting for a family to move in and make it their own.

Modern Rustic

Who doesn't lust after a gorgeous kitchen with a marble-top kitchen island?

Sigh. How dreamy …

This barndominium has pretty much anything a homeowner would want. (Especially when it comes to windows!)

Room to Grow

The only thing better than that gorgeous open floor plan? That even more gorgeous lake view!

Hearth & Home

A great fireplace can make or break any living room space. I love the way this one is backed by that grand staircase.

In the Red

One thing's for sure: No one can say this home isn't big enough! It draws upon that classic red barn style with modern updates homeowners love.

Stairway to Heaven

Now that's a staircase. The custom railings and wood panel accents make it stand out in all the right ways.

Modern Love

Who says all barndominiums can't be ultra-sleek and modern? This home breaks all the rules.

Such Great Heights

Honestly, if I lived here, I think I'd just stare at my ceilings all day. Those beams add so much to an already gorgeous room.

Home for the Holidays

A barndominium makes the perfect place to spend the holidays with family and friends. Imagine a cozy fire, fluffy blankets, and hot cocoa.

Rustic Roots

That crisp white exterior. Those oak-colored barn doors. Doesn't this look like the perfect place to lay down some roots?

Room With a View

This rustic barndominium looks like something out of a storybook, with a modern twist. And that view — yes, please!
