When perfect, dewy skin is so revered, it can be hard to accept things like acne, stretch marks, and scars. Luckily, the world is truly starting to embrace skin positivity: Consider that many celebrities have started to openly embrace their "imperfections" or that many people are starting to turn their scars into permanent, beautiful ink.
One young blogger is right there with them with and advancing the cause by proudly showing off her keloid scars.
A young woman named Bianca regularly shares photos of her keloid scars, using the hashtag #TheGirlWithTheKeloidScars to draw attention to her skin issue.
According to Teen Vogue, the 24-year-old was first seen publicly on Girl Gaze's Instagram account.
The blogger now accepts her scars, but it wasn't always like that.
"From the nasty comments I have received, I have now realized life's too short to care what people think," Bianca said. "I am starting to try love my skin and to believe I am unique."
"This is the beginning of my journey to become free from negativity and to regain a positive mind set," she added.
Bianca also explained she got her scars from taking prescribed tablets for acne.
"My keloid scars developed after I had severe acne on my face, back and chest. I was prescribed tablets to clear the acne but unfortunately they turned some acne spots into keloids. Since the age of 13 I've had multiple injections and I’m now going through surgery to try and flatten the scars on my face even though keloids are known to grow back. Keloids itch and burn and cause pain on a daily basis," she explained.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, some of us have keloid-prone skin which can be caused by any cut, burn, or severe acne. Your background, family history, and age all affect your chances of getting keloids from such things.
As expected, coming to terms with the scarring was a traumatic experience — one that took a toll on her mental wellness.
"They've stopped me from living my life, wearing certain clothing and caused anxiety and depression. Sometimes people don't realise how scars/skin condition can ruin an individuals mental health," she added.
Bianca's message is an important one for anyone learning how to accept their "flaws."
"I gotta start to love these keloids because they’re not going no where," she captioned a photo. Now THAT is the exact approach we should all take.
