The holiday season is yet again upon us. If you celebrate Christmas, there’s a good chance you’ve already gotten your Christmas tree or will soon. Many of us go the easy route and buy our trees from a lot or a store that sells real trees. But some people enjoy the process of cutting down their own trees.
One couple is going viral on TikTok after sharing a memory of their sparse Christmas tree. They decided to go the “cut your own tree” route, and it had hilarious results. But they have a sense of humor about the whole thing.

The video feels relatable.
TikTok user Hayden Hardesty, shared a video from last year in which she goes with her boyfriend going to pick out a Christmas tree. In the video, you can see her boyfriend dragging the tree through the snowy forest and over to their car.
The next time you see the tree, it’s decorated, but you will definitely do a double take.
The before and after is really hilarious.
“When it’s a 10 in the woods, but a 2 at home,” she wrote over the video, adding a melting smiley emoji. In the woods, the Christmas tree looks big and lush, but when you see the final, decorated version, it looks like it’s lost most of its branches and needles. You’ll be asking, “is this the same tree?”

Apparently, the tree got damaged on the journey home.

“We dragged the tree back to the truck, loaded it into the bed, and began our two-hour drive home on the highway,” Hardesty told People. And it was that two-hour drive that the tree couldn’t survive.
“We took the tree out of the back of the truck,” she shared. “By this time, the snow had melted, and it was clear the tree had lost some branches in transit. We just looked at each other in silence and then busted out laughing because there was NO WAY this was the same tree we loaded into the truck two hours earlier.”
And if that wasn’t enough, when they got the tree home, they realized it was too big to fit inside the house!
The couple kept a positive outlook about the whole thing.
The couple realized that if they wanted to make the Christmas tree fit, the only solution was to cut off the top. It may have been their only option, but it didn’t make the tree look any better.
“We brought it back inside, popped a bottle of wine, and began decorating. It was honestly so funny wrapping the string lights around the literal 2-inch trunk and trying to find branches to hang them on. We had a great time decorating our Charlie Brown tree and using every last branch to hang ornaments,” Hardesty said.
“It definitely wasnāt what we imagined, but we ended up with a hilarious, memorable tree and a great night,” she said.
When the memory popped up this year, Hardesty shared it on a whim.

When Hardesty decided to share the video on TikTok, she had no idea that it was going to spark so much interest. “Just going to bring this back to life for a secondā¦. Wishing us better luck this weekend,” she captioned the video. The video has over 8,000 comments from people who are enamored with the tree.
“Okay but imagine how happy it is to be included,” one person wrote.
“We decorate and we donāt judge,” someone else commented.
“The fact that you still decided to decorate it afterwards,” another person wrote.
“2 is generous,” someone pointed out.
“I actually love this style of tree! The ornaments really get to have their moment,” another person commented.
“I refuse to believe that’s the same tree,” someone wrote.
