ColourPop fans found a canceled Kathleen Lights collab hiding in one of its palettes

Colourpop Cosmetics has been up to a LOT lately with numerous products landing in both Ulta and Sephora, not to mention dropping a brand new music festival-inspired eye shadow collection. But no matter how much goes on with the brand, its die-hard fans NEVER miss a beat.

Fans discovered a pretty huge secret about Colourpop by scratching up its palettes only to find the brand seemingly had a collaboration with Kathleen Lights that never happened —  and now some are suspecting shadiness is at play.

Let's get to the bottom of it, shall we?

Let's start with the *actual* ColourPop x Kathleen Lights palette, which was released on December 1, 2017.

This is the Dream St. palette ($16, ColourPop) from the ColourPop x Kathleen Lights' entire Dream collection. The collection included a lipstick trio and the palette.

But according to Colourpop fans, this isn't the first Kathleen Lights palette to ever exist. Say hello to the You Had Me At Hello palette, which dropped in October 2017.

The You Had Me At Hello palette ($18, ColourPop) dropped on October 26, 2017 along with the brand's other palette, Element of Surprise ($16, ColourPop).

A few curious fans scratched the top sticker off of the You Had Me At Hello palette and found a big surprise waiting for them underneath.

Peeling off the top sticker of the You Had Me At Hello palette reveals that not only did the palette originally have a totally different name — but it also was a Kathleen Lights collaboration!

"Holy smokes!!! I saw a post about how the had you at hello palette was suppose [sic] to be a Kathleen Lights collab and that's why it had a mirror and the lights," a fan wrote on Facebook

"They said if you peeled off the sticker on the palette you could see the original design and omg it's true. The palette is the only one to have a mirror."

More fans began to peel the stickers of their palettes back to confirm: You Had Me At Hello was supposed to be Lumina by Kathleen Lights. Here's a close-up of another fan's peeled palette.

The name Kathleen Lights is on full display in all caps and gold letters!

It's also worth noting that the word "lumina" is Romanian for the word "light," and the root word "lumin" or "lumen" is Latin for "light."

Kathleen Lights. Light. Lumen. Lumina.

Coincidence or nah?

Further peeling of the package on the back reveals that this wasn't just a name switch. The phantom Lumina palette also had totally different shade names.

The Lumina palette was supposed to have shade names like Moon Sign, 1992, and Vizcaya.

These shade names were ultimately discarded completely since they aren't in the You Had Me At Hello palette *or* the Kathleen Lights Dream Street palette that came later.

Now fans are wondering what exactly happened to the "Lumina" palette and why ColourPop quietly canceled this initial collab with Kathleen Lights.

Some ColourPop customers are calling the brand "shady" for this literal cover-up.

"Honestly I feel that was a shady move by @colourpopcosmetics and @kathleenlights. I have unubscribed [sic] from her and I don't want to support her after the n-word incident," one ColourPop fan wrote on Instagram.

"I don't know if she got any of the profits or why the collaboration was never released as such. This is disappointing. I want my money back."

For the record, it's unlikely that Kathleen Lights made any money off this collaboration that never was.

Another fan theorized the canceled collaboration was the result of Kathleen Lights' racial slur scandal.

"The whole thing of Kathleen Lights saying something she should not have said on Jaclyn Hill's Snapchat happened just a month or two before YHMAH released," a user wrote in a theory.

"Maybe ColourPop didn't want their name tied to hers amidst all that? If that's the case, it seems weird they would release a collab with her at all, but maybe by the time Dream St. came out they thought it had all blown over?"

The fan's timeline *sort of* adds up.

The N-word scandal happened in September 2017. You Had Me At Hello dropped the very next month in October, which may have been way too soon for a brand to determine how damaging a collaboration with Kathleen Lights would be.

The Dream St. collaboration ended up being released on December 1, 2018 — which was within the same year, but far enough away from the scandal. Perfect timing? It's possible!

This could also all just be about ColourPop and Kathleen Lights changing their minds about the kind of collaboration they wanted.

Not everything is a deep scandal with scalding tea and cruel intentions, after all. Either way, we may never know.
