When it comes to families making the decision to not have more kids, there are different routes you can take. Some women opt to have their tubes tied, taking matters into their own hands. Others simply go on birth control. But some women put the responsibility on the dad, especially when it comes to anything surgical.
Getting a vasectomy is a much easier process for men than getting a tubal ligation is for women. One dad knew this, and opted for getting a vasectomy after his wife gave birth to their third child. But in a shocking twist, because he’s a surgeon, he performed the procedure himself!

Taiwanese plastic surgeon Chen Weinong, shared a video on his Instagram page of him performing the procedure on himself. The shocking clip has tens of thousands of likes and over a thousand comments.
The dad of three announced that he had decided to give himself a vasectomy as a “gift to his wife” to make sure that they don’t have a fourth baby. According to the Mayo Clinic, a vasectomy is 100% effective at preventing pregnancy.
It’s an outpatient procedure that has a low risk of complications or side effects. So it may seem like a risky thing to do, but the dad likely understood that he was relatively safe.
When one commenter asked how long the procedure takes, the doctor explained that typically, a vasectomy takes about 15 minutes. However, it took him “about an hour” to perform the procedure on himself.
In the video, Weinong can be seen reclining in an operating chair as he performs the procedure on himself. “It was a strange feeling to touch and suture my own urethra,” he says per a translation of the caption.

The dad called his decision to operate on himself a “very special experience,” adding “there won’t be another time.”
People were truly shocked and awed by his actions, and let it be known in the comments. “Why do you have such an idea??” one person asked.
“It’s really awesome,” another person commented.
Others expressed concern at the legality of performing a vasectomy on yourself. But according to the New York Post, a “preliminary investigation” by health officials found that there were no legal issues with his surgery.
“I am really brave,” the doctor said.
