Cancel culture is alive and well, and it really only takes one huge misstep to completely derail a fan base these day. Jaclyn Hill, of course, is learning that the hard way. And before you ask, yes, we're still talking about those hairy and controversial lipsticks. The makeup launch that will probably go down as the most drama-filled lipstick release in history is still costing Hill money, respect, and ultimately fans.
So when the YouTuber, who's stayed pretty silent recently, took to her Twitter page to tell fans she misses and loves them, the endearing words weren't received well. Her followers held nothing back, scolding her for her lack of communication and roasting her makeup brand to no end. But Hill didn't go down without a fight and defended herself quickly.
Jaclyn Hill has been MIA from social media following her lipstick controversy.
She hasn't posted on YouTube aside from her explanation video in which she detailed her manufacturing defects, and has been a rare visitor to her Twitter and Instagram pages. So after almost a month of hiding, Hill tweeted her fans to check in and send her love.
"I really love & miss you guys," she wrote on June 24.
But Hill might have wanted to think twice before pushing "send tweet," because many of her fans were still feeling betrayed.
Like one Jaclyn Hill Cosmetics buyer who replied, "You just miss my money honey."
But Hill was click to clap back by saying dollar signs are the least of her worries right now. "I don’t give a [redacted] about money right now. I know what it’s like to be broke & I can handle it. Im sorry to my loyal subscribers, because this never should have happened," she said.
But that fan wasn't the only one unconvinced that Hill was sincere.
For many, Hill's silence has spoken volumes and has led them to believe that she's stayed mum in hopes that the drama will blow over before she has to make things right.
"I’ve always been a huge supporter, but it just feels like excuse after excuse. I enjoy your videos but I’m having a hard time wanting to support your line after all the silence. It just felt like you needed time not to investigate but to come up with more excuses," someone said.
Sadly, the majority of the responses to the clapback were negative.
"I used to be a supporter. But after watching @TruthHurtzGood videos and @TeaByAli videos and then critical thinking for myself, I have come to the conclusion that she has been like this since the beginning. She just has more guts to do bad things because people stan her so hard," another fan responded to Hill's message.
Nevertheless, Hill promised to do better.
For longtime fans of Hill who patiently anticipated the launch of her first cosmetics line for years, the drama that's surrounded the lipstick release feels like a slap in the face.
"I’m so disappointed in you," someone scolded. To which Hill replied, "Me too. I should have done more. I will do better."
But is it all too little, too late?
It's unlikely that JHC and its founder will be able to redeem itself from the firestorm of drama surrounding the 20 lipstick shades anytime soon.
"It’s so annoying when ppl say 'nothing comes out perfect.' This girl not only made it seem like her lipsticks were amazing, she was a [redacted] to anyone who had an issue and refused to take blame then had her influencer friends make vids saying 'it’s not her fault,'" someone said.
But of course there were those few who still hold a soft spot for Hill in their hearts.
"I miss you so much love. I’ve been going through a really rough time and thinking about you, your videos, your products, and your beautiful soul cheered me up a little hope all is well and you can be back soon," an adoring fan tweeted despite the circumstances.
Actions have consequences, and Hill's undeniable negligence is coming back to bite her in the worst ways possible. Here's hoping that the YouTuber is more vocal and honest in the next few weeks and we can put this drama behind us.
