Instagram Thinks Jeffree Star Stole His New Palette Design From Hot Topic

In case you haven't been on the internet in the past week or so, Jeffree Star recently revealed his next eye shadow palette, dubbed Alien.

It's a wacky yet completely on-brand move for Star (even his name is celestial) to come up with a palette that defies humanity itself, and by the looks of it so far, has a shade range that's literally out of this world. Fans are excited, but there are more than a few people who think Star's idea wasn't so original.

In fact, some people think his latest palette is a straight copycat.

So. This is the upcoming Alien palette by Jeffree Star Cosmetics.

People are claiming Star stole the palette's packing straight from a $13 Hot Topic palette.

The now-discontinued Galactic palette from Hot Topic's own Blackheart Beauty takes the same alien head shape as Star's upcoming release.

That being said, the inside of Star's palette has yet to be revealed, so there's no telling if the inside of the palette bears any similarities worth deeming plagiarism.

The only thing the two palettes have in common, that we know of, are the vague alien shape of the packaging and the existence of one purple shade — not exactly enough to warrant a lawsuit or anything.

Still, beauty lovers across the internet still think the Alien palette is a hypocritical move for Star, who's known to call out brands he believes have stolen their product ideas from other brands.

Consider his recent public criticism of Huda Beauty shortly after it released its retro, baking-themed line of setting powders.

Star chastised brand owner Huda Kattan for her powder's extremely similar concept to indie brand Beauty Bakerie's.

Star's fans have been quick to point out, however, that there's a huge difference between making one (potentially coincidental) similar product and using another brand's entire concept to sell a product.

On top of that, the Galactic palette by Hot Topic has been long discontinued — the chances of Star seeing it during his palette's conception period are highly unlikely.

Star has been calling himself an alien for years — even before the dawn of his YouTube and cosmetics careers. Releasing a palette shaped like an alien head is not out of the blue for him in any way possible.

Fans also pointed out that cliché alien heads are also vague and rather generic — is it really possible to steal an idea that wasn't entirely original in the first place?

Whether or not you think Jeffree Star's palette design was stolen from Hot Topic doesn't really matter at the end of the day, though — no one owns a cosmetic trademark for alien-shaped packaging.

It's another thing altogether if the inside of the palette is an exact match for Hot Topic's, but right now everything's legally fair. So this will likely blow over entirely.
