My MIL Refused To Hold My Baby Because I Hated the Thanksgiving Outfit She Bought for Her

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time where families come together, but it is often full of drama. Whether it’s families fighting about who’s going to host, what to eat, or who should pay for what, it’s often a stressful holiday. It only gets more complicated when you have kids. A woman on Reddit shared the way her mother-in-law made her baby’s first Thanksgiving a nightmare – all because of an outfit.

Dealing with your in-laws during the holidays is a special kind of headache, but fighting over an outfit? Too much drama!

In her post, the mom explained that her baby girl is the first grandchild on both sides of the family. Naturally everyone was excited and bought the baby outfits for her first Thanksgiving.

Her parents gave a onesie and dress that the mom described as “cute.” As for her MIL? She gifted her granddaughter a pair of pants and a onesie that read “I’m here because moms turkey got stuffed.”

The new mom found the outfit to be inappropriate.

The mom shared that she thought the onesie was “gross” and she had gotten rid of it. But of course, when turkey day came, her MIL was expecting to see the baby in the outfit. So she asked what happened to her gift.

“I tried to dodge the question because I don’t want to cause a tense situation, but my mother in law kept badgering me about it, not even wanting to hold Daisy because she wasn’t wearing her outfit,” the mom explained.

Her MIL wasn't happy to learn that her outfit didn't make the cut.

“Thanksgiving lunch was really tense,” the mom explained. After they left, her MIL was still upset and “texted me and said it was very rude” that the baby wasn’t in the outfit she gave her. When she again wanted to know why, the mom couldn’t continue to avoid answering.

“I finally told her it was because I didn’t want to put my 2 month old in a shirt that had a sexual innuendo on it, and looking back at photos of her first holiday, I didn’t want that outfit involved. She called me a killjoy and rude so I just left her on read,” she said, adding that her husband supported her decision to not put the baby in the outfit.

People took the mom's side.

Many of the commenters agreed with the mom that innuendo on a baby’s outfit is not holiday appropriate.

“That’s really weird for parents to give their grandchild a onesie that translates to I’m here because of all the unprotected sex my son and daughter in law had. It’s technically true but that’s … weird,” one person wrote.

“First off that’s a pretty gross phrase to put on baby clothes. Second she’s YOUR kid, you are allowed to have her wear or not wear whatever you choose,” someone else shared. “You should tell her that she can go ahead and have another kid, then she can dress that kid up in whatever vulgar phrases makes her cackle.”

Yet another person couldn’t believe what was on the outfit. “That’s just a ridiculous thing to give to a newborn. I actually had to read that twice, just to see if I read what the onesie said correctly,” the person wrote. “This is all coming from somebody who has a dirty mind and loves dirty jokes.”

Some people advised to have her husband deal with his mother.

“Your fiance needs to step up and shut her down as it’s his mom. It should have never come to her badgering you,” one person warned.

Another person agreed, writing that her “husband should have been honest with mom that the outfit was tacky,” to which someone else replied “He needs to deal with his own mother. Not that you can’t speak to her, but that it should be his responsibility to deliver news she doesn’t want to hear and deal with her when she’s mad.”
