My MIL Demands an Apology Because She ‘Doesn’t Get a Say’ in My Son’s Birthday Cake Flavor

A lot goes into planning a kid’s birthday party. Between ordering a cake, figuring out where the get-together will be held, sending out invitations, and more, there’s a lot to consider. One Reddit mom’s mother-in-law, however, recently demanded an apology after her son declared the MIL “doesn’t get a say” in his birthday cake flavor.

Yes, really. A full-grown woman said she wouldn’t come to her grandson’s birthday party after she told him they needed to order a cake flavor everyone liked. The Reddit mom is standing her ground after the MIL threw a fit over having chocolate cake and ice cream at the celebration.

It all started with a 5-year-old kid who wanted a chocolate birthday cake with chocolate icing.

In early October, an exasperated mom posted in Reddit’s AITA subreddit to vent about her situation. The original poster, aka OP, explained that her 5-year-old son’s birthday was coming up, and he requested a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. No big deal, right? She said yes because it’s for his birthday.

Her MIL, however, said they should order a different flavor because she doesn't like chocolate cake.

“My MIL can be a selfish cow sometimes and my son was telling her how he’s getting chocolate cake and chocolate ice cream,” the OP explained in her post. “My MIL said she didn’t like that and my son should get something we all like.”

The birthday boy’s mom explained what happened next.

“My son said, ‘It’s not your birthday so you don’t get a say.’ This would be normally disrespectful but recently said this to my son when went to his friend’s party,” the OP added. “When my son didn’t like the cake flavor and we had the discussion about how the birthday person gets to choose their cake flavor because it’s their special day.”

The MIL called her grandson a 'spoiled brat' and the OP a nasty name.

The Reddit user said her MIL was “shocked” by the birthday boy’s response. So she told the MIL the same thing: “When it’s your birthday you can get whatever flavor of cake you want.” That’s when the situation devolved quickly.

“My MIL called me a b—- and my son a spoiled brat. So I told her ‘With that attitude you won’t be coming to the party,'” the OP wrote.

Although her husband initially tried to talk her into ordering the MIL a cake she would enjoy, the OP stood firm in her stance, and the husband understands and supports her.

Now, the MIL demands an apology or she won't attend the birthday party.

“My MIL doesn’t seem to get that and wants my so[n] to write her a ‘sorry note’ and what he did wrong,” the OP shared. “My husband and I don’t feel like my son did anything wrong by repeating what his parents told him.”

The disgruntled mom concluded, “My MIL said she’s not coming to the birthday party or getting him a gift without the apology note. I told my MIL that’s all on her.”

In the thread, Reddit users agreed she is not at fault.

Reddit users resoundingly agreed the OP is NTA, or Not the A–hole, in this situation.

“MIL is acting like a 5 year old and your 5 year old is acting like a grown up!!! Kudos Mom for letting your son have the final say on HIS day!!” one person wrote.

Another Redditor agreed, commenting, “She is arguing with a 5 year old child over his birthday cake and has the audacity to claim he is in the wrong? Let her stay home and miss the party. Naughty children do not get to go to birthday parties. NTA.”

Yet another person shared, “I can’t believe an adult would give a flying [expletive] what cake her grandson has at his birthday party! She can buy a cake every single day of her life if she wants to! This is a big one day a year treat for a 5 year old child. I can’t. I just can’t.”
