Ruby Rose is the gender-fluid bombshell who just scored a role in Batwoman. If you weren't aware of that, you'd likely remember her for her breakout role in Orange Is the New Black. She's also had appearances in films like Meg. What none of us should be worried about is how Ruby Rose labels her own sexuality. It's not really our business, but sadly, a few naysayers attacked her for identifying as a lesbian anyway.
The actress gets a lot of love (and, um, lust!) from fans, but the hate toward how she identifies herself still led her to question her own sexuality.
CW first announced that it greenlit a Batwoman series and that Ruby Rose would take on the role to the joy of many fans.
Ruby Rose will star as Kate Kane, who is the superhero Batwoman. Batwoman is the first openly lesbian superhero to appear on a television series, which is obviously a history-making feat. Apparently, not everyone was eager to celebrate the labeling or the fact that Ruby Rose would portray her. She experienced some backlash for taking on the role.
Rose's sexuality has been a major hot topic. People have even gotten into debates about it.
"AND WHILE I‘M AT IT, RUBY ROSE IS NOT BUTCH thank u," one person wrote on Twitter. "Ruby Rose technically isn’t a lesbian either, since they identify and genderfluid," another person wrote.
It's a shame that people are even going this hard about how another person lives their life. Why can't Ruby Rose just be, you know, Ruby Rose?
Ruby Rose explained the situation and how it made her feel in the LGBTQ+ issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine.
"When I got cast as a lesbian in Batwoman, I didn’t know that being a gender-fluid woman meant that I couldn’t be a lesbian because I’m not a woman — not considered lesbian enough," she explained.
“My initial response was ‘Pfft!’ And then I was like, ‘Wait. Let me just figure this one out.'"
Yikes.
"How do I right this wrong, because if someone out there is upset by this, I need to know why and how to fix it," she continued.
"That’s when I sort of said, ‘I’m a woman that identifies as a woman. I’m not trans. But if being gender-fluid means that I can’t identify as a woman at any point, then I guess I can’t be that.’ Maybe I need to make up another term, one that doesn’t step on any toes. One where I can be fluid in my gender, but also a lesbian, because otherwise, I’m not sure what I am.”
Since Rose made her statement, people have swarmed to support her being whoever she wants to be, however she wants to be it.
"Genderfluid is a type of gender expression. You can still be a woman and be genderfluid," one fan wrote in Rose's defense. "This does not negate Ruby’s sexuality as a lesbian. Kate Kane is an iconic lesbian superhero being played by a lesbian actress. #batwoman #dccomics #rubyrose"
"Can we just let people be who they are?" another person wrote in frustration. "This all stemmed from people telling Ruby Rose that she can’t be a lesbian because she considers herself a gender fluid woman."
Can we all just agree to let Ruby Rose identify herself as a lesbian if she wants to?
Ruby Rose deserves body and sexuality autonomy. If she wants to identify as gender-fluid instead of as a woman, then that's her choice. If she wants to identify as a lesbian and play a lesbian character, that is also her choice. Policing how she labels her own sexual orientation and gender is just way too much.
Anyway, watch Batwoman when it hits CW during the latter part of 2019.
Batwoman is scheduled to premiere on CW sometime during the fall. No specific premiere date has been named, so you'll have to stay tuned for more details. Whenever it does air, you'll get to see Ruby Rose kill it as Batwoman in all her gender-fluid, lesbian glory. And that's the way it should be as long as it's HER choice. Right?
