Celebrities are expected to let the entire world analyze their personal lives — including their sexual orientation. And though no one should really *have to* explain who they're attracted to, this is one aspect of their lives many stars feel obligated to open up about in order to bring visibility to their communities and act as role models.
And while you may know all about the heterosexual and homosexual communities, there are many other labels that fall under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. There's queer, pansexual, kink, and asexual, just to name a few other identities. The celebrities ahead have spoken out about their sexuality — whether definitive, fluid, or completely without a label.
Janelle Monae
Janelle Monae recently "freed herself" by defining her sexuality. "Being a queer black woman in America," she said, "someone who has been in relationships with both men and women – I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker." The singer then went on to explain she originally identified as bisexual, but then learned about pansexuality (being attracted to all sexes or gender identities) and felt more drawn to the term.
Amandla Stenberg
Stenberg, too, identifies as pansexual, but publicly chooses the term bisexual out of ease and comfort. “I identify publicly as bisexual. I would also use the word pansexual to describe my sexuality. The thing is I use the word bisexual just because I feel like for people who don’t necessarily know that vocabulary…it’s easier to say I’m bi,” the actress said. “So, I understand that erasure piece.”
Bella Thorne
Alan Cumming
Sexuality is hardly defined by relationships or marriage, as Cumming explained. He's married to a man, but still identifies as bisexual. “I have a healthy sexual appetite and a healthy imagination,” the actor said. “I still define myself as a bisexual even though I have chosen to be with Grant. I’m sexually attracted to the female form even though I am with a man and I just feel that bisexuals have a bad rap.”
Demi Lovato
Lovato is a proud LGBTQ ally who often hints she's bisexual. Back in 2015, the singer said, "I'm not confirming and I'm definitely not denying. All of my songs are based off of personal experiences. I don't think there's anything wrong with experimentation at all." More recently, she made her sexuality a bit more obvious at a concert.
Michelle Rodriguez
Rodriguez isn't into labels. “I’ve gone both ways. I do as I please. I am too fucking curious to sit here and not try when I can,” she once said. “Men are intriguing. So are chicks.”
Sarah Paulson
The "American Horror Story" actress feels sexuality labels are constricting. “All I can say is, I’ve done both, and I don’t let either experience define me… I can meet a man tomorrow and fall in love with him and marry him and I wouldn’t discount any of the experiences that I’ve had with women, or vice versa,” she said. “I just don’t think anyone is in a position to dictate what that is for me.”
Lauren Jauregui
The former Fifth Harmony member came out as bisexual in a letter in response to Trump supporters. "I am a bisexual Cuban-American woman and I am so proud of it. I am proud to be part of a community that only projects love and education and the support of one another," she wrote.
Rowan Blanchard
The 16-year-old actress came clean about her identity on Twitter: "In my life—only ever liked boys. However I personally don't wanna label myself as straight, gay or whateva so I am not gonna give myself labels to stick with—just existing;)."
Keke Palmer
After releasing a music video back in 2015, bisexuality rumors were swirling around Palmer. In response, she said, “The video was to represent the young woman today – it’s not the traditional woman anymore – and not the specifics of ‘Am I gay? Am I straight? Am I bi? I’m making the rules for myself, and I don’t have to be stuck down to one label.”
Mel B.
The Spice Girls alum doesn't want to be labeled either. "People call me lesbian, bisexual or heterosexual, but I know who's in my bed…" she said.
Miley Cyrus
Cyrus felt "confused" for years about her sexuality, but ultimately landed on pansexual. "My whole life, I didn’t understand my own gender and my own sexuality. I always hated the word 'bisexual,' because that’s even putting me in a box," she said.
Billy Joe Armstrong
It's a no label zone for the Green Day alum. In 2010, he told Out Magazine he didn't really classify himself as "anything."
Lady Gaga
Gaga has never shied away from her true self, especially when it comes to her identity. "The fact that I'm into women, they're all intimidated by it," she said on men's reactions to her bisexuality. "It makes them uncomfortable. They're like, 'I don't need to have a threesome, I'm happy with just you.'"
Aubrey Plaza
Plaza once explained she was always surrounded by homosexual people, and feels it may have swayed her bisexuality. "I know I have an androgynous thing going on, and there’s something masculine about my energy. Girls are into me – that’s no secret,” she said.
Cara Delevingne
The model is an open book when it comes to her love life, but her "sexual fluidity" is something she's had to explain on more than one occasion. "Once I spoke about my sexual fluidity, people were like, 'So you're gay,'" she said. "And I'm like, 'No, I'm not gay.'"
Ezra Miller
The actor publicly identifies as queer, despite people telling him it was a "mistake" to come out. “They said there’s a reason so many gay, queer, gender-fluid people in Hollywood conceal their sexual identity, or their gender identity in their public image,” he explained. “I was told I had done a ‘silly’ thing in… thwarting my own potential to be a leading man.”
Kesha
Romance has nothing to do with gender for the singer. "I don't love just men, I love people," she said. "It's not about a gender."
Halsey
Not only has Halsey openly identified as bisexual, she's bravely stood up for the bisexual community as well.
Kehlani
Singer Kehlani set the record straight by calling herself, "not bi, not straight," but queer. She even added why she chooses to use this word rather than "gay": "I felt gay always insisted there was still a line drawn as to which “label” of human i was attracted when i really jus be walking around thinking ERRYBODY FINE," she tweeted.
Amber Rose
Fans have often bombarded Rose with questions about her sexuality. Finally, she clarified: "They label me a bisexual freak stripper that fucks Kanye on a daily basis. To answer that: I’m extremely open with my sexuality. I can be in love with a woman, I can be in love with a man. I’m not into bestiality, but as far as humans go, I definitely find beauty in everybody, whether they’re heavy-set, super-skinny, if they’re white, black, Indian, Asian, Spanish. I can see beauty in anybody. I’m not into threesomes or orgies and shit like that. If I see a women and I think she’s beautiful and I like her, and she likes me back we can definitely try to be in a relationship together.”
Christina Aguilera
She's been married to her husband for nearly eight years, but still calls herself sexually fluid. "I don’t get to kiss all the girls and the boys, but my [ex] husband knows that I get into girls. I think it’s fun to be open and play," she said. "The line is real to me. My husband and I check in with each other, but I definitely love women. I think they’re more attractive to the naked eye.”
Stephanie Beatriz
The "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" star came out as bisexual in 2016, which led to her show's character coming out as bisexual, too.
Angel Haze
The female rapper identifies as pansexual though she still finds it hard to describe. "I am whatever i am when i am it," she once said after a troll criticized her preferences.
Josh Hutcherson
"I would probably list myself as mostly straight. Maybe I could say right now I'm 100 percent straight. But who knows?" the actor said. "I think defining yourself as 100 percent anything is kind of near-sighted and close-minded."
Kristen Stewart
Stewart came out as "so gay" while hosting "Saturday Night Live," but still explains she's "open" to dating men again. “I’ve always really embraced a duality. And really, truly, believed in it and never felt confused or struggling," she said. "I just didn’t like getting made fun of.”
