Losing a child is every parent’s worst nightmare. No matter the circumstances, nothing can prepare a person for that kind of heartache. A Colorado family is feeling that pain on a level that’s truly incomprehensible. Not only did they lose their 5-year-old son, but his 11-year-old brother allegedly purposely killed him. The unidentified boy’s death occurred at a home on March 10, 2026. Not long after investigators from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the resident, they took the juvenile into custody.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene in the early evening.
The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a five-year-old child at a home in the 5200 block of South Jerico Street in Centennial. Deputies responded around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

According to a release from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office posted on X, deputies responded to a call about the death of a child around 5:30 p.m. They quickly confirmed no additional threat existed to the community. Officials did not reveal a cause of death but identified the 11-year-old as the prime suspect in his brother’s death. Deputies arrested the boy on a first-degree murder charge and took him to the Marvin W. Foote Youth Services Center.
Investigators have released very few details.
Because of the age of the suspect and victim, police noted they would not release many details about the crime or the identities of those involved.
Sheriff Tyler Brown shared condolences with the family in the news release on X. “Our hearts go out to the family of these two young boys and to everyone in our community who is grieving this loss,” he expressed.
“We know tragedies like this impact not only the family, but also classmates, teachers, and neighbors throughout the community. We appreciate the support and patience of the public as our investigators work to gather the facts and pursue justice in this case,” Brown added.
The case has shocked their community.
It’s never easy to hear about a child’s death, but when it’s associated with a crime, it’s even more difficult.
Kirby Loughlin, who lives near the family, told KCNC that the neighborhood children all played together and that the situation doesn’t seem real. “It’s something that you know, as a parent, is probably your worst nightmare.”
Other parents shared their heartache on the sheriff’s department’s X post.
“This is just absolutely heartbreaking. Found out when I tried to pick my son up from school and police had the next block up shut down. Hearts out to this poor family,” one person wrote.
One comment recognized the police and how hard these kinds of cases can be for them, too. “Thank you for all your hard work. I am sending prayers to the family of the boys, and the community. But also to the sheriff’s Dept and all our first responders who were part of the team..I am sorry for you, and I pray for you,” it reads.
Sadly, some people just want to point fingers.
Many sounded off in the comments on KUSA’s Facebook page about the case, with a lot of people blaming the boys’ parents.
“I blame the parents. The parents should be charged also because they should have been watching their children,” someone wrote.
“Makes you wonder what kind of homelife those kid were living an dying!!!” another person commented.
One mom shared her own horrific story of child loss. “My son died from homicide at the hands of an 8 year old and 11 year old. I tried my hardest for the children to be held accountable for my son’s death and Arapahoe County absolutely failed my deceased son,” she wrote. “Its about time they hold the suspect accountable even if they are 11 years old.”
People need to save their opinions and put themselves in this family’s shoes. They need all the love and compassion they can get right now.
