Texas Firefighters Discover 4-Year-Old Girl’s Strangled Body Amid Fire & Man Hiding Underneath Her House

There is never a valid reason for hurting a child, let alone taking their life. When these tragedies occur, I think understanding a person’s motivation can help people wrap their minds around the grief. But when it is a senseless, seemingly random attack, it’s likely a hurt that can’t quite be described. Texas parents who lost their daughter, identified as Hope Raley, may never understand why she was strangled in her bed as her room was set ablaze, but they can hopefully gain peace knowing the man responsible will be behind bars for life.

Law & Crime reported that Humberto Martinez, 43, pleaded guilty to the capital murder of a person under 10 years of age and will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to Ochiltree County court records shared by KFDA.  Martinez also was charged with arson and two counts of obstruction or retaliation, jail records reviewed by Law & Crime revealed.

The heinous crime occurred on July 20, 2022, before the Perryton Fire Department was called about a house fire. They arrived about 10 a.m. and discovered the fire was mainly isolated to one room. As they tried to put out the fire, they discovered Hope’s body in bed, and she’d been strangled to death. The homeowner told the emergency service crew a man was loose in the home, and authorities found him in a crawl space under the house, per Law & Crime.

It remains unclear why the man was in the home at all. According to a report made immediately after the crime was discovered, Hope was not related to the homeowner or Martinez, KDFA reported.

Former Perryton Police Assistant Chief Nick Yara told KDFA that “We’ve seen a lot of things, I’ve seen a lot of things in my career and this is by far the worst case that I ever had to deal with.” He added, “It’s a very tragic thing for the family and for the community and today we were lucky to see justice.”

Martinez reportedly waived all of his rights to appeal in regards to the case.

“We’re very grateful. Justice was served today, I believe. Like I said, there is a lot of loose ends that still need to be taken care of, but I believe that there’s going to be some peace for the family,” Yara said. “This guy has been behind bars; he’s going to continue to be behind bars for the rest of his life, and that’s justice.”
