7-Year-Old Asleep in Her Own Bed Was Shot in the Head by Stray Bullet During Drive-By

A young South Carolina girl is fighting for life after being shot. Skylar Baker was asleep in her bed when she was struck by a bullet in the head. As of right now, the incident is under investigation, but police are saying her injuries were the result of a drive-by shooting. So far, there have been no arrests, and whoever shot the girl is still out there. The girl’s family has been rocked by the shooting and her sudden injury. Her neighborhood has been rocked too, as neighbors say this kind of shooting isn’t the norm.

The Pageland Police Department released a statement on Facebook, noting that a 7-year-old girl was shot during a drive-by shooting in the early morning of June 1, 2025. She was airlifted to a hospital and was listed in critical condition.

“The 7-year-old did not deserve this careless act of violence. We are praying for the child and the family,” the statement read.

In a follow-up post on June 2, police stated that no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. They also shared that they “hope that someone will come forward with answers” about who might have been involved.

“We are heartbroken that this little girl is suffering due to the actions of someone who had no regard for the life of others,” police shared in the post before urging anyone who knew anything about the shooting to reach out.

The mother of the girl, who was identified as Skylar Baker, spoke to ABC News about the shooting. Essence Chambers told the news outlet that the bullet went through their house, hitting Skylar in the right side of her brain. Chambers said her daughter was on a ventilator.

The mom explained that her daughter, who was a “happy child,” and a “ball of energy,” now has a plate in her head. Soon, the girl will undergo a craniotomy.

“Before all of this, she was completely healthy,” Chambers told ABC News. “I want everybody to keep praying for her.”

A neighbor, Melissa Massey, spoke with local news affiliate WSOC-TV, telling it this type of violence is “unheard of” in their neighborhood. “Drive-bys? Maybe shooting. Maybe, but drive-bys, that’s crazy.”

Pageland Police Department Chief Dean Short spoke at a press conference, saying the shooting was a “terrible thing, especially in a small community.”

“What matters is we come together, support one another and take a stand against this type of violence,” he said.
