8-Month-Old Dies After Young Mom Upset About Dirty Diaper Put Him in a Scalding Hot Bath

Courtlyn Jacoby Cleamons died in February 2025 at just 8 months old. His mother, 21-year-old Jatoria Renae Cleamons, allegedly became frustrated with her baby and placed him in a scalding hot bathtub. Courtlyn suffered significant burns and ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Now, his mother faces charges in her baby’s death.

Medical responders, police, and Bowie County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home in Hooks, Texas, on February 4, following a 911 call, according to KSLA. Cleamons reportedly told police she had placed her baby in scalding hot water while bathing him two weeks earlier because she was upset about a dirty diaper.

Courtlyn received severe burns, and his mother had evidently failed to seek help from a medical professional. First responders performed CPR on the unresponsive child before rushing him to an area hospital. Staff pronounced him dead a short time later, KSLA reported. An autopsy revealed Courtlyn’s cause of death to be homicide, and his mother is the prime suspect.

“Though his time on earth was brief, Courtlyn brought immense joy, love, and light to those who knew him. His sweet presence will forever be cherished in the hearts of his family,” his obituary reads. “He was preceded in death by two aunts and numerous other family members who now welcome him into eternal rest.”

Courtlyn leaves behind Cleamons, father Marjaevion Cummings, sisters Sa’riah Hall, Aniyah Hall, and Ariayah Hall, and a host of family members who adored him.

On June 13, while apparently evading police, Cleamons posted a tribute to her late son on Instagram. She shared photos of Courtlyn and a birthday wish.

“Happy Heavenly 1st birthday to my baby I love you so much and I miss you so much we will meet again if I have one wish I used it just to see you again rest in love my Babyboy,” she wrote in her post.

According to the Texarkana Gazette, the Hooks Police Department needs the public’s help in locating Cleamons. Anyone with information about her whereabouts should contact police.
