Amazon Driver Allegedly Hit Mom & 4-Month-Old Baby in Horrific Hit-and-Run Accident

A Florida mother and her baby are recovering after a horrific accident involving an Amazon delivery truck. The unnamed woman was pushing her 4-month-old baby in a stroller last week when Sarahy Parra-Ovalles, 45, a Venezuelan migrant working for Amazon, allegedly hit them with her truck and left the scene. The mother suffered a "catastrophic brain injury," but her baby, thankfully, was unharmed.

According to a news release from the Miami-Dade Police Department, Parra-Ovalles was arrested on August 23 and charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury and leaving the scene of the crash without bodily injury. But some say this isn't enough and large companies like Amazon need to vet their employees more thoroughly.

The accident was classified as a hit-and-run.

Per police, Parra-Ovalles allegedly hit the mother and child on August 22 as they attempted to cross the intersection of NE 7th Avenue and NE 191 Street. The mother was pushing her 4-month-old in a stroller and walking her dog. According to surveillance footage obtained by police, the collision pushed the mother down and caused the infant to be knocked out of the stroller.

"After the collision, the subject is seen exiting her vehicle, setting the stroller upright, and placing the infant back into the stroller before fleeing the scene. The victims were transported to Memorial Regional Hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, where they were treated for their injuries," police noted in the report.

The mother was seemingly left for dead.

According to the victim's family's attorney, Judd Rosen, the video shows Parra-Ovalles propping up the baby in his stroller but ignoring the mother. He told the New York Post the woman allegedly left "the baby alone in the middle of the intersection and the mom bleeding from her skull."

"This is one of the worst and most graphic videos as a parent that I have ever seen," Rosen added.

Parra-Ovalles was apprehended the next day.

Police arrested the driver and charged her the following day. Rosen told the Post his client had a catastrophic brain injury and had to pump breast milk for her baby from the intensive care unit. He said Parra-Ovalles was reportedly released from jail despite his client's injuries.

"She was run down in broad daylight and left for dead, and within 24 hours of getting arrested, [the suspect is] back on the streets, potentially driving around. Where is the justice system when you need them?" he asked.

Parra-Ovalles no longer works for Amazon.

According to the Post, Parra-Ovalles originally came to the United States in 2019, on a tourist visa that expired in 2021. At the time, she was granted Temporary Protected Status, which allowed her to apply for a work permit, a Homeland Security source told the Post. It is unclear how long she worked for Amazon, but a source told the news outlet she is no longer employed by the company.

The driver reportedly had other infractions on her record.

Para-Ovalles had a citation for failure to stop at a stoplight in 2019 and a 2020 violation for careless driving, the Post reported.

Rosen holds Amazon partly responsible for his client's injuries.

"This is the last person they'd want driving around in the suburbs, and Amazon simply doesn't care … all they care about is making money," he said , according to the Post.
