Netflix’s ‘Worst Neighbor Ever’ Reveals Horrifying Truth Behind the Strange Noises Coming From Next Door

The Netflix docuseries Worst Neighbor Ever might seem like a show about annoying or nosy neighbors and the people forced to live next door to them, but it’s so much worse. In the Season 1 finale, the story centers on a woman convicted of fraud, Caroline Herrling, and the neighbors who saw the gradual changes in her in their California apartment complex.

Now, one of the neighbors, Bella Baskin, has come out to share more details about the horror show of living near Herrling and the possible red flags she missed. In hindsight, everything about these kinds of neighbors seems to be a red flag, and Baskin shared more details with Oxygen about what she and other neighbors noticed before and after Herrling was arrested for her crimes.

Caroline Herrling is the focus of one of the ‘Worst Neighbor Ever’ episodes.

Herrling was found guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud after forged documents, social security cards, and other evidence of her and her co-conspirators stealing millions from vulnerable individuals were found in her home. As the docuseries explains, Herrling was also accused of taking the body of an elderly man, Charles Wilding who died in his home before one of Herrling’s associates found him dead in the residence.

Court documents obtained by Biography further explain that Herrling was accused of removing the body from the home, destroying the remains, and using associates to help her impersonate Wilding so she could sell his home and assets and earn millions in the process. When Baskin spoke to Oxygen after the episode aired, she explained that there were signs she didn’t realize were red flags until afterward.

“We started to notice her hanging out with a suspicious crowd,” Baskin said. She also noted the people coming in and out of Herrling’s apartment, who appeared to have tattoos and ankle monitors.

After Herrling was accused of dismembering Wilding’s body and even grinding his teeth, Baskin realized the noises she heard weren’t from Herrling rearranging furniture, like she thought.

“I thought she was doing normal meth activities, like rearranging furniture,” she admitted. “Not chopping up bodies or doing millions in wire fraud.”

She also said she and other neighbors noticed packages missing from people’s doorsteps. Now, it’s a little easier to see the likely culprits, and the red flags. At the time, though, it was just a suspicion.

People saw other red flags.

Especially with the criminals in Worst Neighbor Ever, it’s easier to see the signs afterward. But a user on Reddit posted their own assessments of the neighbors depicted in the series and they found some common threads, or red flags, about most of them, including Herrling. The user credited unemployment and, therefore, free time and a lack of structure as clear signs that these neighbors would do something horrible.

The user added in their post, “These red flags are enough to know not to mess with a neighbour or it ends badly.”

Caroline Herrling was sentenced in 2024.

According to the Department of Justice, Herrling was sentenced to prison in 2024. She was given a sentence of 240 months, or 20 years, in federal prison. She was also ordered to pack back $3,887,051 because of the millions of dollars in fraud that she and one of her co-conspirator’s, Matthew Jason Kroth, were accused of stealing. Kroth was sentenced to 200 months, or 16 years, in federal prison for his role in the crimes.

Herrling’s release date will be in 2039.
