A 5-year-old boy was killed Sunday afternoon after he allegedly found his sister’s gun in a purse while inside their Chicago apartment, according to a police report. Area 2 detectives Monday morning were questioning the boy’s adult sister, listed in the report as a concealed carry holder, in connection with the child’s death in the 4400 block of South Greenwood Avenue, police sources said.
The woman told police she had been taking a shower when she heard a loud noise from one of the bedrooms, found her little brother with a gunshot wound to the forehead, and called 911, according to the report. The gun, which police found on the bed, had been in the woman’s purse, per the report.
The boy was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he died soon afterward, authorities said.
The child’s identity wasn’t yet public as of Monday morning. A spokesperson for the Department of Children and Family Services didn’t immediately respond to an inquiry about whether the family had been previously investigated.
