Every day, so many missing person cases are filed. We often hear about the ones that end sadly, with the missing person being found dead or injured. Those are always hard to hear, because naturally, we want to hold out hope that everything will be fine. This is especially true with missing person cases that have gone cold after many years of searching. But one cold case actually has a positive ending. Christina Marie Plante went missing after allegedly walking to the Arizona stable where her horse was located. After three decades, she has been found alive. Although that’s cause for celebration, there was a surprising detail given.
Police were able to announce that the case had a happy ending.
On April 1, 2026, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office shared the announcement on social media, saying a “successful resolution” had happened in the Christina Marie Plante case.
Plante went missing from Star Valley Arizona in May of 1994, the statement explained. She “vanished without a trace from her community,” prompting a missing person report. After her disappearance, law enforcement, volunteers, and other support mounted an “extensive” search effort to find the girl.
“Despite exhaustive ground searches, interviews, and investigative follow-up, no viable leads were developed,” the statement read. Plante was entered into a database of missing children, the sheriff’s office noted. Flyers also were distributed locally, regionally, and across the country.
Even though the case reached a dead end, it was never closed.
Investigators would occasionally re-investigate the case, looking at existing evidence and following new information as it became available.
Things changed when the Gila County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit was formed, police shared. Thanks to advances in technology, “modern investigative techniques” and “detailed case review,” they were able to pursue new leads in the case.
“After 32 years, Christina Marie Plante has been located alive,” the statement read. “Investigators have confirmed her identity, and her status as a missing person has been officially resolved.”
The office then thanked the other agencies it worked with over the years to keep Plante’s case alive. “Out of respect for Christina’s privacy and well-being, additional details will not be released at this time,” the statement added.
A shocking plot twist was revealed.
On April 2, 2026, Capt. Jamie Garrett of the Gila County Sheriff’s Office appeared in an interview on NewsNation’s Jesse Weber Live to speak about the case. According to Garrett, Plante left home on purpose with the help of relatives.
“I guess she wasn’t happy with where she was living and who she was living with, and she ran away,” Garrett said in the interview. “I was dumbfounded.”
Garrett spoke with Plante and told her, “‘Oh, my gosh. Okay, so you ran away.’ I told her, ‘You know, we were under the impression that somebody kidnapped you? It was deemed a criminal offense.’”
Plante, who now lives under a different name, confirmed her former identity with Garrett but offered few details about her past.
“She said that was a long time ago, that was an old life,” Garrett told NewsNation. “She’s in her adult life. She has her family now. That’s not something she even thinks about.”
