There is no “ideal” way to lose a child. If they are sick for a long time, it is a slow, painful loss. If it happens suddenly, your world gets rocked. One is not more tragic or upsetting than the other, so when one parent is left grieving, I think all of our hearts can empathetically ache — especially when we realize that unimaginable loss could happen to any of us at any time. A Colorado mother is grappling with that reality after her 3-year-old son, Isaiah, was hit by a car while playing with some older children near an embankment by their home in Erie, according to Law & Crime.
Shanice Silver reportedly ran inside for just a minute and then suddenly heard a big crash. She ran outside and saw her toddler lying in the middle of the road but no vehicle in sight.
“This is the first time he ever went up there (or) was put up there,” said Shanice in an interview with KDVR. “That’s what we’re trying to figure out. Because I can’t even get up that embankment.”
Officers and emergency personnel tried to revive Isaiah, but sadly, he succumbed to his injuries. Erie police officers, who were called to the scene, are still hunting for the perpetrator who left the young boy in the road.
“Dispatch received the initial call from a motorist who stopped after observing the child lying in the roadway. That individual remained on scene and is cooperating with law enforcement,” police stated in an updated press release on Facebook.
“Detectives have reviewed surveillance footage from the surrounding area, and investigators identified a vehicle of interest that was in the area at the relevant time,” the release continued. “Investigators are currently in contact with that individual as part of the ongoing investigation.”
In the meantime, the grieving family set up a GoFundMe account to help cover funeral expense and allow the parents to take time off work to grieve and be with their families.
“His mother, Shanice, and his father, Mitch, are living every parent’s worst nightmare—mourning the unimaginable loss of their baby boy,” wrote fundraising organizer Marie Astbury. “His brother, Elijah, and sister, Aiyana, are grieving the loss of their brother, a bond that was taken far too soon. Isaiah was a joyful, curious, radiant soul who filled every room with laughter.”
Officials have not provided a description of the car or any other identifying details but are asking if anyone has an information to call 303-441-4444 to provide any potential insights.
