Couple Is Charged With Child Cruelty After 6-Month-Old Baby Is Found With 29 Broken Bones

A Georgia couple faces charges of child cruelty after their infant daughter was found with multiple broken bones. The mother brought the child to the hospital, where her inability to tell a consistent story raised concerns. As a result, doctors were on alert when they performed a body scan.

While the broken bones were immediately reported, it has taken police nearly a year to press charges. The Georgia couple was recently arrested, but police have yet to release more details on whether they’ll be facing prison time.

According to a police report shared by Fox 5 Atlanta, on February 4, 2024, the Rome Police Department was called to Atrium Health Floyd Medical Center. Staff at the hospital told police that a 6-month-old girl had come in with a broken femur and bruises on her face.

A nurse told the officer that Savannah Carol-Louise Cox and her grandmother brought the girl in to be checked out. The two women “seemed to ‘change their story’ by asking if the infant’s injuries could have occurred from a fall and then asking staff if the injuries could occur from someone ‘dropping her,'” the police officer wrote in the report.

When speaking with the officers, Cox claimed that the baby had been to the pediatrician earlier that day. Both women seemed to suggest that the girl was injured during the visit. Cox claimed she noticed the injuries hours later, prompting her to bring the girl to the hospital.

WSB-TV reported on the case, writing that according to the report, nurses performed a body scan on the girl. The scan showed that the infant had 29 bones that were either freshly broken or in various stages of healing. They included, but weren’t limited to both of her legs, her right arm, ribs, and right shoulder.

Despite the removal, it took the Rome Police time to get a case together against the Georgia couple. Law enforcement has not released details of the case. Investigators told Fox 5 Atlanta that they wanted to put together the best case possible to get justice for the baby.

The couple were arrested and charged with first-degree cruelty to children and aggravated battery.
