Dad Jailed for the Murder of His 8-Month-Old Daughter Dies Hours After Being Released

Jannah Abughazaleh was just 8 months old when she died in August 2024. The baby received second-degree and third-degree burns while in a bathtub at her home in Sacramento County, California. Sadly, her parents, Hussein Abughazaleh, 26, and Kristina Siedlecki, 25, allegedly didn’t seek medical attention for Jannah until it was too late.

According to a December 2024 news release from the Sacramento County sheriff’s office, the parents allegedly watched Jannah’s condition deteriorate. Police say they were aware their daughter was dying.

“What they disclosed to me during the investigation was the fact that they knew she was dying, and they didn’t take her into the hospital because they didn’t want to get arrested and they didn’t want CPS to get involved in their family,” Detective Leslie Trau told KCRA in December 2024.

Police eventually arrested the parents on murder charges related to Jannah’s death in December. Now, her father is also dead.

According to KCRA, Abughazaleh had a medical emergency in jail on January 26, 2025. After he was taken to a hospital, medical staff gave him a “grave prognosis.” A judge released Abughazaleh from custody on February 7, on what is called a compassionate release, and he died just hours later.

The United States Sentencing Commission explains that the court must meet specific criteria to grant compassionate release. Per the sentencing commission, “‘extraordinary and compelling reasons‘ warrant such a reduction and that any reduction ‘is consistent with applicable policy statements issued by the Sentencing Commission.'”

It’s unclear how Abughazaleh died. Jannah’s mother remains in jail and will appear in court on April 2.

Abughazaleh’s mother, Naomi Magness, told KCRA in December that she worried about Jannah’s safety before she was born. She had contacted Child Protective Services to protect her.

“I don’t want anybody to go through this,” Magness said.

She said she tried to contact CPS to find out about Jannah and then called a child abuse hotline. Following her hotline call, she spoke to the Sacramento County sheriff’s office. Finally, the coroner’s office confirmed Jannah had died.

“You should have took the baby out. She lost her life. She didn’t even have a chance to live a life and you screwed up not taking the baby out,” Magness said, per KCRA.

Sacramento County shared a statement with KCRA in December that it would not comment on the case. “Due to legal and confidentiality guidelines, we are unable to confirm, deny, or discuss any specific reports,” the statement read.
