What to Know
Police in Del Rio, Texas, responded to a hospital on June 25, 2026, following a call about an injured woman. When they arrived just after 2 p.m., they found 32-year-old Caroline Peña with multiple stab wounds.
Though staff transported her to a San Antonio hospital for treatment, the mother of five succumbed to her injuries later that evening. Detectives centered the investigation around 21-year-old Kitty Mia Diaz, her 19-year-old sister Amaya Cookie Diaz, and 21-year-old Kyandra Renee Faz. Each woman now faces murder charges in Peña’s death.
Police arrested the suspects within hours of the stabbing.
According to a release from Del Rio Police, after speaking with multiple witnesses, investigators identified their prime suspects very quickly. Officers arrested the Diaz sisters around 4 p.m. and Faz a short time later in connection with the stabbing. When Peña died around 9 p.m., things changed for the suspects, who now face murder charges. The women’s online photos appear to show a bit of smugness, a trait typically not seen in mugshots. Del Rio Police Chief Frank Ramirez didn’t disagree.
Ramirez said the women had an argument before the attack.
Ramirez reportedly told TMZ the women all lived in Del Rio and the incident escalated in front of a residence. He said he believes the women knew each other, but it’s unclear why they were together or what prompted the attack.
Nevertheless, he noticed the suspects’ unbothered appearance during their arrests.
“My impression is it didn’t look good, and you would think there would be a little more remorse in a situation like that — it looked callous,” he told TMZ.
Video of the sisters’ arrests angered viewers.
A YouTube video shows officers taking handcuffed Kitty Mia Diaz and Amaya Cookie Diaz into custody. The women seem totally unfazed by their arrests and almost as if they think the paparazzi is there to make them famous. Neither looks like someone saddened about a mother’s murder.
“They stabbed her to death and then laughed about it. Ice in their veins,” someone wrote.
This person agreed, writing, “Yep! She was all smiling when cops were putting her in the police car. She’s worthless!”
Loved ones want justice for Peña and her children.
Peña’s family and friends immediately banded together for her children. A GoFundMe shared a sweet description of the mother of five.
“She was a twin, a cousin, and a friend to many, always greeting people with the biggest smile and hug, no matter how much time had passed. Caro was fiercely protective of her loved ones, especially her nephews and her own children, two of whom have autism. Her joy in being a mother was unmatched, and her generosity touched everyone she met—she would give her last dollar without hesitation,” the GoFundMe reads.
“Now, five children are waking up without their mother. Two of them have autism and cannot fully process what her absence means yet. All five will carry this loss for the rest of their lives,” per the GoFundMe.
According to police, the investigation remains active, and the women could face additional charges.
