When it comes to punishing teenagers, one of the most powerful things is taking away their technology. Teens who don’t have access to their cellphones or computers feel like they can’t survive. Even though there is plenty of life to live beyond a screen, it can feel like torture. Most of the time, teens accept their fate and move on. They may not like it, and they’ll likely argue a bit, but it ends there. Of course, occasionally situations escalate into something serious.
A Minnesota teenager filled with rage when his parents took his cellphone away, and instead of talking to them, he allegedly decided that shooting them would be a better solution. Luckily for them, they survived, but their son now faces charges.
The teen allegedly shot three people.
According to court documents obtained by KSTP, police rushed to the scene at a Bemidji apartment complex in the 2500 block of Itasca Loop Northwest just before 5 p.m. on May 7, 2026. They found three adults with gunshot wounds. The unidentified teenager allegedly shot his mother and father following a disagreement about cellphone privileges. A third person in the wrong place at the wrong time also was shot.
Although the parents lived, they had serious injuries. According to court documents, the 16-year-old’s mother reportedly had a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was “bleeding profusely,” per KSTP. The teen’s father had a gunshot wound to the femoral artery in his thigh, requiring a tourniquet. Emergency responders also placed a tourniquet on the third victim, who was shot in the leg.
The teenager allegedly got the gun with the intent to harm his parents.
The boy’s mother told police her son became “irate” when she and her husband took away his cellphone privileges. When the teenager finally turned himself in to police later that evening, he allegedly told investigators that he acquired the gun to “retaliate” against his parents for what he deemed to be an unfair punishment. He also told police he ditched the weapon after the shooting. According to KSTP, he’s due in court on May 21, and a judge will determine whether to advance his case to an adult court.
The story raises plenty of questions.
We know that getting a gun in this country is often easier than getting a driver’s license, but many people commenting on WSTP’s post on social media are still wondering why the teenager would resort to this kind of violence.
“All the gun laws in world won’t stop this kind of crazy. But discipline when he was a child might have,” someone commented. “Recognizing mental health issues when he was a child could have.”
“So much to say on this topic. All I can say and I’ve been saying this my whole parenting life. If you don’t handle your children the law will. Stop being so friendly parents!” another person added.
Some believe that kids no longer understand the idea that life’s not always fair.
“He should learned to just deal with it, You don’t always like what life sends your way, But your parents want you to have the best life possible, They don’t want to scold you, But they do want you to succeed, If you were older you would think highly of your parents and love them, I sure do, I am very proud of my parents and I will appreciate everything that, They ever did for me, Because I love them,” one person commented.
Luckily, this entire family survived. But who will ever feel safe around this teenager again? Anyone who believes that shooting is the answer when things don’t go their way is not someone people want to be around.
