Elementary School Teacher Found Dead in Classroom Before Class & May Have Been There for Days

An elementary school community in Baltimore is reeling after the death of a “beloved” educator. Deborah Tolson was found dead inside the school on a Monday morning. It’s likely her body had been at the school all weekend. Personal details about Tolson have not been released, such as whether she was married or if she had family nearby. It’s likely her death was related to illness and not something like murder. Still, the death of a teacher, especially someone who teaches young kids, is going to be formative for them. The school district and school officials are doing their best to provide support.

The shocking discovery was made at the start of the school day.

Tolson was a math interventionist at Arundel Elementary School, WBAL reported. The 75-year-old educator had worked for Baltimore City Public Schools for 23 years and had been at that school for nearly a decade.

According to WBFF, her body was found inside the school on the morning of March 9, 2026. Police said they didn’t see any signs of trauma or suspect foul play, and an autopsy was conducted to find the cause of death.

Upon the shocking discovery, students were dismissed from the school at 10:15 a.m. that day.

A statement on the death of Tolson was quickly released.

“Ms. Tolson was a very beloved member of our school community for seven years,” Principal Kerry-Ann Malcolm expressed in a letter to families shared by CBS News Baltimore. “A pillar of the school community, she was beloved by both students and staff.”

School officials made sure a crisis team would be available with support and resources for students and staff.

“Our hearts and thoughts remain with Ms. Tolson’s family and friends, as well as our entire school community, in this difficult time,” Malcolm added in the statement and urged adults to talk to their kids about the situation.

“Please expect our students to be affected in some way with this news. I encourage you to talk about what happened and to allow your child to discuss her or his feelings and thoughts.”

Police activity was visible around the neighborhood.

James Lee, who lives next to the school, spoke with WBFF about witnessing the police activity.

“At first I thought maybe they was looking for somebody they was chasing someone coming out of the woods,” he said. “Because they focus, it was close focusing on the woods on the side of the building. So, after that I said, okay, I don’t really know what’s going on. I didn’t hear nothing else.”

A cause of death has been released.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner announced on March 10 that Tolson had died of natural causes, People reported. She experienced an intracerebral hemorrhage or stroke. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, an intracerebral hemorrhage, which is bleeding into the brain tissue, “is the second most common cause of stroke and the most deadly.”
